CKII Nominated for IGN Best PC Strategy Game of 2012

CK2 won't win where a public vote is concerned, due to it being niche. XCOM will undoubtedly win that category, though realistically CK2 should win some form of award for its work in bringing people to the grand strategy genre. I myself never truly understood how a paradox game worked until CK2.
FTL is a fantastic game. I'm not sure how the hell it qualifies as strategy though... I always thought of it as a Roguelike-Spaceship simulator. 0.o XCOM is another fantastic one for me, but the replay value isn't anywhere near the amount of CKII.
Of course, while we may not win it, being on the poll itself speaks volumes of what these video game organizations think of the game, and in a way that's a win for Paradox.

Fantastic concept. The developers delivered, but they have done nothing more. Untl we get a free roam mode, it's incomplete as far as I'm concerned. Crusader Kings 2 is a better game by far.
'Tis a shame too. That game has 0 replayability. It's one and done.
It was supposed to, but it didn't.
The first time you play, and you will never want to play anything else. Second time and you will think it's okay. Third time and you quit in the middle vowing never to play again. (This happened twice for me. Once with the GOTY version, and again with Gods & Kings)
Just voted. Crusader Kings II might not win, but maybe it will get others to at least check it out.
Agree 100% with all your comments. FTL was great, but unsure that it fits as a "strategy" game. XCOM was/is amazing, but CKII is just a more impressive achievement, and it's hard not to go with CK when I've spent nearing 100 hours and have just become re-addicted.
And yeah, the visibility alone is great. I mean, over on PC Gamer they actually did a preview for Europa Universalis IV!! And it's clear that's a product of CKII b/c the guy assigned to write it (for good or ill) was only introduced to grand strategy with CK II.

Anybody know why Gods and Kings is nominated again? It being neither a standalone game nor good. If it wins its a travesty and i'll throw a hissyfit for days.

What a terrible line up (apart from ck2). It definitely deserves to win. Hopefully it comes second at least. If XCom comes second I will be so pissed off, it's not even strategy.
to be fair ... if Xcom aren't strategy ... then what is it? ... the old Xcom games were certainly strategy and at its core not much have been changed.
Yeah most likely its either XCOM or Civ that wins and have to admit XCOM is a great squad based strategy game. Still voted CKII as its the best one in many ways.

For those opposing XCOM as a strategy: While this is technically true, the video game industry has sort of mixed up the entire concept of Strategy and Tactics, resulting in tactical games like XCOM and strategic games like CKII and CIV being discussed as if they were the same genre. We know they are not, but there is little we can do about it. As for FTL or whatever it is called... I still don't see the appeal in it. It seemed more like a Sims type game from what I read, but that's really the ignorant opinion of someone who really doesn't want to play it.
Interesting, because I'm lost over 1 thousand of hours in this game... however, the latest patches destroyed any balance. (before them there was some, but now, it's total madness)It was supposed to, but it didn't.
I voted for CKII, but honestly I love X-Com as well (and hope that it wins, as I'm not super-hopeful CKII can pull it off).
A little annoying that Civ's expansion makes the list. Nothing against Civ, I've had oodles of fun with the Civ games (sigh... just wish the Colonization side games were a little deeper, always had a blast colonizing the new world with a modded in Russia), but its expansion shouldn't be held as "strategy game of the year". Expansion of the year nomination? Coo. But let the actual, full games have the awards.
Still, X-Com and CKII in the same year... it was truly a great year to be a gamer. Hey, and TEW 2013 is out next week, just in time for winter break!
