I've tried asking https://paradox.zendesk.com/ - but I haven't heard anything; so I suppose I can ask here. Basically, I have an on-again, off-again crash problem. The crash does NOT happen when the game is saving but (for any given save file) at the same date in the game. If I go to an older saved game, the game will go past that date and continue to work until the crash occurs again. And it seems to be getting worse. I tried running the 1.091 edition from a different location on my computer, and it seemed to work for a while, but then the problem returned. I'm not running any mods. And I have Steam.

Is there a known solution to this problem? I've attached the dxdiag file.

Also, I get the following report:

Just to be clear, what version and checksum show on the main game menu?

Your dxdiag looks fine.

What DLCs do you have active?

Can you describe what exactly happens in the crash? Are they all the same, or differ in some way? Are you doing anything in particular that seems to trigger it?

Does it even happen soon after you start the game up, or only after playing for a while? If the latter, you may have an overheating issue. Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, Google for and install SPEEDFAN.

When I'm running 1.092, the checksum is (ICBN). When I run 1.091, the checksum right now is (GVOA) - though I thought it was something different earlier. Both versions are using the same source of save files.

I have all the DLCs available from Steam installed.

As far as I can tell, once a particular "saved game" file starts crashing, then it will always crash at exactly the same date (even if I play to that date from that file in in different ways - so, as far as I can tell, there is nothing that seems to trigger it - rather, it seems tied to the specific date for any given save file once it's infected (there is a caveat if I open an "infected" saved file with a different edition of the game which I mention below.)). The dates are not tied to auto save; and can be in the middle of a month. If I go back to an older saved file, usually it will go past that date and the game will continue until that file becomes "infected" and has a crash. Then that file will always crash at the new (later) date.

Sometimes if I go back only one or two autopsaves (which are set to annual), then those slightly older files will still crash at the same date as my manual saved file. In other words, sometimes all saved games within about 3 years or so all crash at the same date and I need to go to an even older file to get past that date.

Also, if I open an "infected" save file in 1.091 it will seem to get past the crash date and advance until it gets a new crash date. Then I can open it in 1.092 and have the same effect.

As noted above, there is nothing that I can see as a constant that is triggering the crash - only the date is constant for any given "infected" save file.

As to overheating, I haven't been looking at it, but the problem occurs with a particular file and a particular date whether I've been running the computer for hours or just turned it on. Plus I can open up my CPU and it doesn't seem hot at all. I seriously doubt its a heating problem.

One note, I haven't had a crash since I just updated the graphics card drivers. But my old drivers were only a month or two old, and I haven't played much since updating them. I'll play some more and keep you posted on whether the driver updates fixed the problem.

Thanks for the help.

If it does start crashing again, you may have the republic patrician retinue bug, there are threads on this in Bug Reports.

Well, it crashed again. I'm not sure exactly when it started, but it may have been about the time I discovered retinues. I guess I'll check out the other thread.

Um, does the republic patrician bug have a known solution? If so, could you perhaps link to the thread with the discussion? I did some searches and didn't find any discussion about the bug. At least, "republic patrician" and "retinue bug" and some others didn't turn up anything.

I'd like a workaround for this retinue bug myself. This bug reminds me of the duplicate unit id bug in EU3.

while it's not *strictly* related to Republics, it is rather unlikely to occur without republics. Thanks for those.

What happened is that someone with a retinue died without an heir (in a feudal structure, this is extremely unlikely as lieges enter the succession, rather more likely in republics)
So I'm not aware of any published workaround per se, but it seems if you can find those orphaned retinues in the save game and delete them you'll be fine. maybe ask for help in the User Mods forum.

Well, I released all my retinues, and the saved game then continued to work past the date it had been crashing at. It worked for a few more years and then . . . bam! CTD.

Also, now a "corrupted" saved game file always crashes at the set date regardless of whether I open it in 1.092 or 1.091 . . . SO my old fix of switching back and forth between game versions no longer works.

It has nothing to do with your retinues, but rather those owned by AIs who die with no successors.

The best way around it is just to mod the retinue cost to be unpurchasable IMO.

I am experiencing the same issue. After playing around a bit what I found is that after a CTD the saved game files (all of them in the folder) seems to get corrupted. Whats weirder still is that if I delete one of them in the folder, the oldest one in this case, it deletes every one of the saved games in that saved game folder and I am left with just the autosaves. Either way, the game crashes after a few months in every case. I have noticed this ever since the last patch where the game became very unstable and bug ridden.

This thread was primarily about an entirely separate bug, the one I mentioned in posts #4 and #7. Your issue is the autosave bug, please contribute what you can to the devs on it here http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum...rash-during-save-or-autosave-Please-post-here

Actually no. That thread is in regards to a very specific issue and nothing posted here matches that.

1) the game crashes DURING saving (be that autosaving or manual saving)
2) you have a prior savegame (e.g. the previous autosave) that does NOT crash
3) you are running vanillla CK2, no mods (exception: pure graphics mods)

I am running all the DLC except for Republic. The games do not crash during autosave, they just crash.

In some respects boozermonkey's problem sounds similar to mine. But I haven't had the issue of losing all the saved files if I delete one.

Also, I looked through all the "republics" on my save game and (while some of the rulers were old) all of them had heirs. So it doesn't appear that I have the patrician-inheritance bug. Unless, of course, it's one of the non-republics causing the problem . . .

It can be anyone, but it's rare for a monarchy to not have any heir at all, which is why it overwhelmingly hits republics.
