I just tried to launch my CK2 through Steam and it caused my PC(Windows 7) to crash. I have tried to load the game twice since the last patch. I had to shut the power off on my PC off just to restart it as the task manager would not even come up, very uncool. I have all the DLC's except Sunset, and Old Gods. I was thinking maybe I would dump the cache file for the game cause that fixes these kinds of problems with EU3 and Victoria 2 but I couldn't locate one. The crash occurs on the loading screen loading map (creating textures) and the music abruptly stops. I am afraid to restart CK2 as I do not want that kind of freeze crash to happen again. Please advise. Thank you

Hi Kaspa000,

Could you please upload a DxDiag of your system?

  • Open your Start menu
(Windows 8 - Use the Charm bar(move the mouse to the top right-hand corner and slide down) and click on "Search")
  • Type "dxdiag" in the search field (without quotes)
  • Open the dxdiag program
  • A window called "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" should pop up now
  • At the bottom right-hand side, click on "Save all information"
  • Save it to a place where you can find it easily, for example your desktop
  • Upload the file and attach this file to your reply

Thank you for the DxDiag, as far I can see it looks fine. You could check if there are any later video card drivers than the ones of March 2013.

Further I'd suggest trying a full clean installation first.

  • Important:: Go to '..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\save games\' and copy all the save games you want to keep outside the folder
  • Uninstall Crusader Kings II
For Steam users: uninstall the game from within steam by right clicking on the game and select "Delete content".
  • Go to the folder where you installed Crusader Kings II in, and check if the Crusader Kings II folder is removed. If not, delete the entire folder
For Steam users: Installation folder can be found at: '..\Steam\SteamApps\common\'
  • Go to '..\Documents\Paradox Interactive\' and remove the entire Crusader Kings II folder
  • Reinstall the game, make sure you install the game outside the 'C:\Program Files\' or 'C:\Program Files (x86)\' folders, as it can cause issues with permissions

There's all sorts of stuff there in the My Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II folder that is all created when you play the game for the first time. You also store your mods there and if one of them is written improperly it might cause the game to crash. The easiest way to check and see if that is the problem is just to rename that folder to something else then start the game. If your problem goes away then you can copy the saved games folder from the old one into to the new one that it created when you restarted the game. If you have mods, copy the mod folder too. If it stops working again after you copy the mod folder then you have a non-working mod and you just need to figure out which one.

If the game still doesn't work after removing or renaming the My Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II folder and restarting it then you can just shut the game down, delete the new folder it made, and rename the old folder back. Then at least you know its not the configuration or cache files that is the problem.

Reinstalling the game seems to have worked for now. I have logged over 660 hours on CK2 and have never had a single issue. I don't know what caused this but I sure hope you guys can figure this out. Having to do forced shutdowns I fear has damaged my computer. I don't want this to happen to any of my fellow Paradox fans. Ever since the second forced shutdown Internet Explorer, Kaspersky Anti Virus, Skype, and Steam are now plagued with errors and constantly have to be shutdown. I can only hope uninstall/reinstalling everything will fix these issues. The only 3 things I do on this PC is Facebook, Youtube, and Paradox games. Once again thank you for responding to this issue.

Well I am sorry to tell you but you are wrong. When a game gets frozen on the loading screen during creating textures for 3hours there is an issue. When reinstalling only that program, that was the issue. I should have been able ctrl + alt + delete to bring up the task manager and I was frozen out. What other recourse was there then a forced shutdown? Believe me I looked for one. These problems started the day of the last patch. My computer is well maintained and cared for. I don't know what you think you know sir but nothing in this life is certain. All I ask is you guys figure out why this happened so no one else has these issues. As a loyal Paradox costumer and fan I don't think your comment was appropriate. I am not asking for anything just informing you of the situation. Thank you and have a nice day.

When you clicked on ctrl+alt+del, were you able to alt tab and thus see the task bar? That way you can still click on the task manager and select the program with the arrow buttons and then click on delete to end the program.

Further there could be a hardware defect or other issues, it is not required that a pc is not well maintained to get problems or similar as hardware defects can always play up. However this would require more troubleshooting to find what the issues could be, programs that can help with that are GPU-Z, CPU-Z, Speedfan, Speccy.

Currently I suspect the game files could have been corrupted, especially as the full clean installation (including removing the document folders of the game) worked.

I thank you for your concern. I was not at the time able to alt tab, see the task bar, or anything. It was very frustrating, I was completely locked out. This happened only twice, the two times I had the issue loading. I loaded Victoria 2 and EU3 with no problems. My friend who rights code told me these things happen. Something about memory leaking and corrupted files. Well fingers crossed and thank you for your time.

No problem, it's why we're here :) Let me know how it goes further and if any (other) problems play up.
