Okay, to be flat out honest, this is a rant. But before you run away, listen to me.
I just purchased the Crusader Kings II hardcopy/box version of the game, as I am unable to download games, and because I knew it required Steam, I download Steam while I'm waiting for CKII in the mail.
All week I have been attempting to get this stupid thing to work, however every time Steam stalls at 26% when updating.
I contacted Steam Support, and they were helpful (if slow to reply) but none of their fixes work. And I only find this out after running around turning off and uninstalling clashing programs - I mean, what the ...?
I find that according to Steam’s official list, everything from Google Toolbar, to Skype, to antivirus programs, will stop Steam working.
Anyway, after all this rigmarole, my game arrives and now I am unable to play it.
My point of disappointment is that I need to download Steam (which I can't even get working) to activate CKII. Why can't Paradox do the normal thing and have a self-contained, built in activation like EVERY other game (from the Age of Empires series to Civilization IV and Anno 1404) does for their hardcopy ... or just drop the activation requirement all together? It is stupid.
Anyway, this is my opinion. Just let me say that although I have thoroughly enjoyed VickyII and EUIII, I am totally disappointed with how Paradox went about this with CKII - to the ends that I can now never play my game.
