I just hope they don't make that too flexible. Like, there should be ethoses which are available to, say, a Dravidian, which would never be available to a Swede. I find that too much flexibility ruins the uniqueness of a particular location/culture/faith/*.* and I hope they avoid that. :)

That sounds like Traditions, not Ethoses.

Possibly though to properly implement the government form could be something that is a larger system and could even apply to the HRE (like letting you control HRE electors).
Good point. Hey, I was definitely expecting an Imperial Mechanics DLC, but I still think that’s coming down the pipeline.

Honestly, I’m one of those people who’d be perfectly happy with a straight up Rome focused dlc
Really not what i was expecting, was hoping for something to do with Byzantium but honestly... im pretty darn happy with what I've seen, Artefacts was one of my fave added features in CK2s lifecycle and i missed it in CK3 so im chuffed it'll be coming to CK3 and from how it looks... artefacts will be quite a big deal, super stoked to see what modders do with it when they get their hands on it.

The cultural changes/additions also look really cool, the divergences sound interesting so will this be a completely dynamic system in-game where say France conquers Iberia will the Cultures slowly start to change as time goes on to suit the French overlords kinda like England did when the Normans took over?.

The whole thing sounds cool so yeah.. pleasantly surprised.
Agree on all points.

BUT, the next new content better be Byzantine/Rome/Imperial focused lol

You may be right. As long as no two far-flung cultures can be substantially similar I'll be happy with that part, regardless of whether the differences consists of Ethos, Traditions, or whatever else may be in the update. :)

Greetings!

What’s the most symbolic image of a medieval ruler you can think of? Maybe they’re riding a horse through a village, maybe they’re perched at the top of a tower overlooking their realm, or maybe they’re leading troops in battle… those are good, but there’s one thing that is depicted more than anything else, something quintessentially medieval, something that truly evokes the feeling of the era - a ruler on a throne, surrounded by courtiers, vassals, and petitioners.

This is something brand new to the Crusader Kings series, an area we’ve wanted to improve upon for a long time. We have your ruler in the interface, we have your realm on the map - but what really connects them? Now you’ll be able to see your monarch, on their throne, actually ruling!

Kings & Emperors will gain access to the Royal Court, a throne room where their loyal subjects can gather, where glorious artifacts can be put on display, and where the ruler can Hold Court in order to deal with the troubles and wishes of the realm. Similarly to medieval rulers of old, you can aspire to have the Grandest court in the world, or perhaps simply live up to the expectations put on you by your peers - no one respects a stingy monarch!

With the Royal Court, we want to immerse you in the life of a medieval ruler by letting you take the reins and experience rulership first-hand. You’ll not only see your ruler occupy the same space as your family and subjects, but you’ll have the opportunity to engage with many new and exciting systems - sponsor projects, spend gold on lavish amenities, solve strife between squabbling courtiers, appoint jesters, and much more! How will you rule your realm?

And what is a ruler without subjects, their people? After all, it's they who pay the taxes! Much like with faiths, cultures will be made more interesting and malleable - all in line with our vision of Player Freedom and Progression.

Different cultures will have different traditions, different opinions of each other, and even shift and change with time. No longer will cultures be static and similar - we want to give you, the player, the freedom and possibility to shape your own culture and guide its progress in a variety of exciting ways. Of course, culture will change at a slower pace than Faiths do - it’ll be gradual over time, tradition by tradition. Though sometimes larger shifts can occur due to isolation, or as the result of two different cultures intermingling.

Grow the acceptance between cultures in your realm, diverge your culture to adopt a new Ethos, or create a Hybrid between two cultures in your realm - adopting the language, traditions and aesthetic choices you find the most compelling. There are many possibilities to explore, and no two games will ever look the same again!

All of this is a big undertaking, as it breaks new ground for the game in more than one way! It’s going to take a little bit longer, but as we get closer to launch we’ll start sharing many more details - both on what’s been mentioned here as well as other things coming in the expansion. We hope you’re excited to join us on this journey!

You can expect the expansion to release later this year.
Thank you PDX. Am excited for this DLC. I have been holding off playing a proper campaign till something like this came out. Can’t wait. I really like the direction.

The article also mentions that royal courts are only available for feudal and clan governments. So probably no special Steppe royal court as they are mostly tribal. So I'm guess the 3 of the 4 are Europe, Middle East, and India with the 4th probably being Subsaharan/East African (though I could also see Paradox doing a second type of European royal courts instead).

But I agree some more variation would be nice. Though I can see this as something they add more of down the line.
But you can convert to Feudal/Clan as Tribal, so there is no reason not to have one for areas that start as Tribal. Then again, excluding this system from Tribal makes little sense in the first place.

More peacetime content and cultures with a similar mechanic to religions is what's got my attention atm. Between custom religions and custom cultures, especially if custom cultures come with aesthetic changes, I'm hoping it'll feel like some fully yours, alt-history content. Depending on the amount of flexibility there are in cultures it'll be fun RPing that a new religion is influencing the culture too.

Making my court/kingdom into a bastion of learning and refinement is also 100% my crack. Hopefully there'll be events like sponsoring philosophers or artists and building some new duchy buildings.

The fact that it's gonna be 3D is nice I guess but it's not really why I play (most) of Pdox's games.

Will the "wandering" nature of some early medieval courts with no fixed capital be represented in any way?

I hope the DLC will justify it's price. Since the price is higher than any other DLC before. I hope it will be "major DLC". I do not have problems with less DLC but more content-filled and them being a bit higher in price. We still probably have the opportunity to pick it up for half the price after a year. But the content would have to persuade me in doing so. I'll see whether that's the case or not.

Disappointed it would take even longer to catch up with CK2 content, even this DLC is going to release god knows when, and we still have giant Tribal Khazarias and Mongols, no Merchants, barebones main religion like Catholicism without Pope elections or basic features like Investiture or Antipopes etc.
Artifacts and some new court events aren't going to keep my interested for another year until next big expansion, hopefully ElderKings2 will release faster, because right now this looks just like a big flavour pack

Since it seems to be a big DLC, i think a lot isn't announced yet.

I don't know where this assumption comes from... Why it seems to be a big dlc, if not a lot of things are announced? And why would they just not announce a lot of features? It makes sense for Dev Diaries where they cover each feature one by one, but in announcement like that I don't remember when not all main features were listed?

They'll have to justify it's price.

30 dollars is basically a new game.
