So they started working on CK3 in 2016. Horse Lords came out in 2015 so that might have been the expansion that made them think, "we really are struggling to fit mechanics into this game that wasn't designed for it."
And they said nomads would be playable, but would basically be tribes in CK3. We can read into it that there will be a Horse Lords expansion at some time. I hope they come up with something interesting and unique and fun.

But here are all the expansions that they were releasing to us while already working on CK 3:
Conclave
Reaper's Due
Monks and Mystics
Jade Dragon
Holy Fury

So I have a lot of faith that as they worked on those DLCs, they took what worked well and moved that to CK3 and cut the things that didn't work well.

The fact they are releasing Ck3 so soon instead of putting the franchise down and giving it a break for a few years means to me that the devs are still really interested in continuing CK but got stuck with the old 'chassis' that CK2 has. Combine that with the idea that CK2 has a bit of DLC bloat, it seems like this is more of a continuation of CK2, just trimming down the fat.

And, working alongside 5 expansions for CK2 they have had the funding to make it really good.

I'm excited.

It certainly puts to rest all the smartasses who kept telling everyone who said it was going to be CK3 introduced, that it couldn't be as they were still working on CK2, & it had years of development left in it.

i hope the nomadic tribes have some differing play styles compared to settled tribes in ck3. playing as a nomad for the first time in ck2 was very unique. hope they can capture that unique feeling in ck3 at launch.

CK2 is an testing ground for CK3 so they can see what people like and dislike and focus on the good while removing/improving the bad part of CK2.

I was a PDXCon 2017 and what I got from Henrik's presentation at the time was precisely that they were working on CK3. Too many of the questions he answered were either "We'll have to see for CK3/The current engine cannot support that". That and the fact that only 8 people were working on CK2 at the time really made me think that they were indeed working on CK3 elsewhere.

Wasn't it 2016 when that one thread about the muslim tribal system was posted? The one darkrenown replied to alluding to "it being too late to add due to an end-of-cycle".

I forget the actual name for the concept, otherwise I'd look for the thread.

in your opinion what were some bad aspects of ck2?
  • Diplomacy is lacking
  • Too little internal politics, too easy to manage large realms as the ai is pretty passive
  • Warfare is too gamey with focus on maximizing tactics
  • Subject-lige relationship could be more interesting and the difference in government forms could be better
  • Technology system is pretty weird with ability to tech far ahead of history and it is just press buttons and gather Points, could be more interesting and more tied to the character part of the game
  • The courtier actions are mostly leave and forgot, could have more events and be better made

I would substitute WoL for JD and call that the core CK 2 game. I would add SoI but Islam needs a major rework IMO.

Wait they started making CK3 in 2016? Did they actually say that? Sorry I didn't watch their livestream at PdxCon, so I'm uninformed at the moment.

I don't recall them saying that directly, but indirectly. Johan said, that Imperator's development was started about 1 1/2 years after CK3's development started. He also said Imperator's development started about Q4 2017 iirc ( or was it Q3 not sure), so it means CK3 was started in 2016.

If we are talking about feature bloat eu4 is well overdue a rendezvous with destiny
But in ck2 to 3 internal management is my biggest along with a way to takeout raiders without fighting or giving up land
