Hey guys I hope you're all doing well , I bought a new laptop recently and now that I have some free time I decided to install CK3 , but the thing is it just runs for 2-3 minuets and then my GPU would be used 100% for some reason then overheat , then the PC would just shut down !

Now my computer can run total war warhammer 1 & 2 , and it runs HOI4 smoothly as well , but CK3 is sucking an ungodly amount of GPU , is this normal , or did it happen to anyone of you guys ? cuz on my older laptop it ran great , but on this newer (better) one it just crashes everything.

any advice ?

Check the drivers, maybe the game is incompatible with the current driver and leads to that, or if you want you can disable all the gpu drivers to check, if you can run hoi4 smoothly it means your cpu can handle ck with the integrated graphics

And i also recommend to check pci power distribution, that thing can lead to gpu overheat, hdd at eternal 100% with 0 kb/s reading and all that

Ah this reminds me of the days I killed a macbook pro playing CK2 when I first found it from all the damn heat.

I don't have an answer for you but are you sure you meet the minimum specs? Total warhammer 2 runs smooth in wars? Are you sure it's the GPU?

DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/CK3/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log

Thanks for the advice , I'll try all that.

That system.log shows you running game version 1.3.0 - is that right? Current is 1.4.4

And I see Window 10 has not had major updates applied for nearly 2 years. While unlikely to be the cause of this problem, you really should run Update and apply the new Win10 version you see there.

With those settings you should max out at 60hz which should not cause overheating. What fps do you see in the game?

I updated the game a few hours ago and it still casuing this issue , and the frame rate is 40 to 50 , very solid...for 2-3 minuets only , until the overheating starts taking place.

Well, if it's overheating at less than 50 fps there is something severely wrong , maybe a broken fan or old thermal paste in the GPU?

One more thing to try; edit that pdx_settings.txt and change this line as follows:
"renderer"={
version=0
value="OpenGL"
}
That is case sensitive, so exactly like that please. Does that make any difference?

Ah, you said it was a new machine, so it won't be old thermal paste then. You might need to get the hardware checked out, maybe they even omitted it?

Hey man sorry to bother you again , I figured out the problem , it's that CK3 is sapping all the GPU for some reason even tho it doesn't need it , and I have no idea how to limit its cap for GPU usage , do you know how to do this ?

You can limit frame rate, but not GPU % as such. Believe me we'd know if this was happening to everyone!

In the game settings in the launcher set it to fullScreen, vsync off, and refresh rate cap to say 60.

If that doesn't help you may need to use GeForce Experience to do that.

Sorry for bothering you and I wish you well. Yesterday I've posted on the CK3 Reddit the following: I'm basically having the same issues as Breton_Lord and I've tried everything I could think of and everything that the people suggested to me on Reddit.
I don't know if they did find a solution but I am intrigued for some insight.

Please do not re-open old threads here, always make your own new thread in future.

Right click on ck3.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, cap refresh rate at 60.

Thank you for your answer! And sorry for re-opening this thread, I will open new ones in the future.
The things in the upper paragraph didn't help it sadly, but here are all the files you've requested.
There isn't an exceptions.log file in my folder.
