CK3 is suppose to be a historical game however its map is too full of inaccuracies and made up countries, it should be improved in some ways to provide a fun yet historically accurate experience
View attachment 786841

With most of our games improving the map is an ongoing project. As we find better references we tend to add more detail and fix inaccuracies over time.

Even with the best of data there are often multiple ways you could cover the same area. What is a vassal, part of someone's domain or even independent land is always a judgement call based on a reality that was much more complex than any game can allow. Generalizations have to be made, and often based on incomplete data at that :)

As mentioned by others here another crux is that a game requires there to be a clear distinction of who owned what for every bit of land we cover. This means we cannot really leave any area blank, blanket label it with a general group of cultures or tribes, or employ fuzzy borders where "ownership" was fleeting or volatile. This is perhaps even more of an issue in CK compared to some of our other games since what realm controls something isn't even enough for this game, we need to know (or at least reasonably guess) what character was in charge. Sometimes this means we have to make characters or dynasties up, though it happens less than I would have guessed before working with these databases, a realization I had back during the research for Rajas of India for CK2.

The above means we will never really have a map that is "right", its always going to have to be a generalization. Still there are many areas where we have made mistakes in the past and I am sure there are still many worth revisiting today (and in 1.5.0 we have already revisited the 1066 setup of India some, though I fear it makes the area even less like the posted map here ;-o ). If anyone has specific grievances with the map and the historical starts we are very grateful if you spend some time describing what these are, how the area could be better portrayed, and provide some references for why it should be that way. The Suggestions forum is traditionally where I've asked for things like these to be posted and where I would keep an eye out for it :) In time I am sure we will revisit most regions on the map and we will most certainly look to what has been posted to see what to improve and how to do it.

Now all that said:

I would argue that in many ways the CK map _is_ more accurate than what you posted. It simplifies things far too much for my taste, and also misspells a number of dynasties around the world.
It seems to generally focus on Europe, with lessened level of detail the further you go away from it. Leaving out even major dynasties, like the Cedi/Kalachuri dynasty in India for instance.
Most likely that is fine for what the maker of that map wanted to achieve, a quick look at what the world was like while William the Conqueror was doing his thing on the British isles, but it would not really work out that well in this game.
