It's not on my list. CK2 is the best designed PDS game to date, but the era doesn't speak to me as those of other PDS games. It's probably in my Top 20 though. Here's my top 10 (in no particular order because it's hard enough to decide which games are the ten best):

Kerbal Space Program
Victoria II
GTA: San Andreas
Mass Effect 3
BioShock Infinite
Half-Life 2
Left 4 Dead 2
Final Fantasy VI
Deus Ex
Minecraft

CK2 is one of the best games released over last few years, and is definately a leader in the genre, in the current market.

Not the best ever, because no one game can be. Surprised this is the first mention of Alpha Centauri, also one of the best strategy games. But it all comes down to personal preference.

1: TES IV: Oblivion
2: The Witcher 2
3: CKII (however, I have more gametime in CKII than any other game BY FAR)
4: TES V: Skyrim
5: Medieval 2: Total War
6: Rome: Total War
7: Empire: Total War
8: Fallout 3
9: Shogun 2: Total War
10: Battlefield: Bad Company 2

The Total War franchise gets a lot of hate here, but it sounds like there are at least a few CKII players that came from the Total War series, like I did.

Empire:TW?! That was the biggest piece of crap I've ever bought. Definitely worse than Shogun 2, a solid game.

Empire Total War is a great game. I must have gotten the Jesus of all copies because the only bug I had was that the research buttons got mixed round.

Hmm... I'd put Alpha Centauri ahead of it, if not for its lacking AI (seriously, the AI in that makes some pretty bad decisions). I might also put Sins of a Solar Empire ahead, but I haven't played much lately due to moving from Windows to Linux, and unlike Alpha Centauri, my Windows netbook can't handle it.

Galactic Civilizations II definitely has an edge on Crusader Kings II though due to its rather impressive AI. Kinda wish this game had that good of an AI.

It's up there, and I'm not just a strategy gamer. I love GTA, open world games, some indie games, etc.

Strategy as a genre is one of my favorites. With that said, CK2 ranks highly but I won't quantify the list and place it on a list (different games, different lists).

With that said, I'm most looking forward to GTA V, EU IV, Assassin's Creed 4 and CK II DLC so that says something.

The best game for many years I'd say, but still not the best.

Oh I might as well:

1) The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
2) Dwarf Fortress
3) Shadow Of The Colossus
4) Total Annihilation
5) Crusader Kings II
6) Vampire Bloodlines: The Masquerade
7) Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance
8) Portal
9) Grim Fandango
10)Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Empire:TW?! That was the biggest piece of crap I've ever bought. Definitely worse than Shogun 2, a solid game.

Haha, I understand the criticisms people had of Empire (AI simply couldn't handle defending territories across the globe + trade routes, lack of AI naval invasions, come to think of it AI in general, quite a few bugs), but I loved the scale! Also being the first one with naval combat was huge for me, idk naval combat + HUGE scale + great time period makes it a great one for me. Shogun 2 is lower on my list because just as I loved the scale of empire, I disliked the much smaller scale of Shogun 2. Also, I'm not a huge fan of realm divide.

@NI_Mcknight, I don't get the hate for Oblivion! Always thought it was fantastic, and liked it more than Morrowind

It is interesting to see the diversity in people's taste here. I would have thought it was more homogeneous, but I stand corrected.

My personal favourites are:
1. Baldur's Gate 2 & V:Bloodlines
2. CK2 / Vicky 2 / HoI2 / EU3
3. Operation Flashpoint & ArmA
4. Monkey Island :)
5. Neverwinter Nights

And I enjoy the occasional Total War, GTA and Mass Effect...

I spent most time with CK2, but I wouldnt say it's the best game I've played.

Others didnt have the same replay value though, like Halflife or Bioshock or System Shock, but they gripped me more. Especially the Bioshock / System Shock franchise is by far more immersive and interesting than CK2.

CK2 appeals to my desire to paint the world my colour.

CK2 is the top game on my Steam most playtime list. With 1352 hours of playtime it sure is one of my favourite games.

For curiosity, the other top 5 games in that Steam list are:
2. Borderlands
3. Dragon Age
4. Fallout 3
5. Recettear

Definately Best Strategy Game i played. Maybe only Panzer General II comes close. And Football Manager if that counts as part of the genre.

But im more of a RPG gamer so this game still cant touch Baldurs Gate or Planescape Torment!

It is interesting to see the diversity in people's taste here. I would have thought it was more homogeneous, but I stand corrected.

My personal favourites are:
1. Baldur's Gate 2 & V:Bloodlines
2. CK2 / Vicky 2 / HoI2 / EU3
3. Operation Flashpoint & ArmA
4. Monkey Island :)
5. Neverwinter Nights

And I enjoy the occasional Total War, GTA and Mass Effect...

Yes yes yes....to Monkey Island :)

I haven't played CKII long enough to know. but its certainly the most unique game i ahve played, and the only grand startegy game that has truly knocked my socks off.

My other favourite games of all time are Portal 1/2, Flower, Journey, Ico, Shadow of the Collosus, Shemnue, Last of Us, Mirrors Edge, Machinarium, Botinacula, Longest Journey,

I like CKII because it has the beauty that you cannot control anything even you are one to rule... like real life.
In Total war or Civ series, they are more like a strategy game, where you can control everything.

Meanwhile, in CKII, it is a "Grand" strategy, or I would say it is a simulation for managing a house of dynasty.
Everybody will act based on their benefit and it limits the growth.
It does not only focus on conquer, but also try to make a stable empire through law, culture and religion throughout succession.
