Forty Years may not seem like a lot to us god-like dieties in Crusader Kings 2, but I'm afraid I may lose that much game play if this problem can't be solved!

Basically I've got a 350-ish year long savegame that was running preeeetty smoothly. I decided, foolishly, one day to not bother saving and just use my autosave backup. So I did, and t'was fine and I played that day and was happy. But then my CK2 crashed, it does that some times but I wasn't at all bothered. I tried to reload the most recent autosave and... Well after something like 10 seconds of watching a time glass flip around the screen went black and 'Crusader Kings 2 is not responding...' came up. I tried again. And again, and again. Same thing each time. I tried Old Autosave, same thing again. Older autosave? Nope, 4 times I tried each autosave (and I tried again today after giving my computer a day off) and the autosaves just keep not-loading to this black screen of doom.

Please don't tell me I'm going to have to try and assassinate the royal family of Germany, Saxony, Burgundy and Lombardy again? That was pure fluke :( Plus several Holy Wars! Is there any way to recover these saves? Clearly something must be corrupting them, because the aformentioned 40-years-ago savegame loads fine. Did I do something in my game to anger the gods of Save? I heard something about uploading a save game or whatnot, but I've no idea... Perhaps a step-by-step breakdown on what I could do to maybe fix this would help? :)

Thanks for reading!

P.S, my CK2 is V2.3 and my checksum on launcher and main menu both say BTOF.

This happens whether you load then from the first game menu, or later in the menu structure?

There are no mods involved?

But to answer your question, there is no magic process that will guarantee to fix any broken save. If the file is corrupted, say 0 bytes or 4gb in size, then it's toast. If there was a game bug and there's just some invalid info in there, it may be able to be edited out with Notepad++ or similar. The best people to help with that are in the User Mods forum here, as they're more experienced in analysing save file issues.
