The tech guys wanted a new thread. Problem is the same as described in the previous thread "CK2 Launcher Crash at Start". Here is my DxDiag.

Here is what has been attempted so far:
-reinstalled the game
-reinstalled the .net stuff umpteen times
-several reboots in between the above steps
-Tried to set to admin running (right click, set to admin) for both the splash and main came exe's

Its something to do with the DLCs as if I run in XP-compatibility mode it works fine (though without the DLCs)

I'm running Windows 8

I do need you to describe your exact problem in detail, please. Your brief description in the other thread didn't seem to match the original problem that thread was about.

What happens if you Run in normal, not XP compat, mode but with no DLCs checked in the launcher?

Please try installing:

First: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555

After that: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8328

Then: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
(If that doesn't do anything then http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 )

If I run it in normal mode but uncheck the DLC boxes it crashes in the same as when the DLCs are checked. The problem is pretty simple, you double click CK2, it opens the splash page (where you can update the game), click play and it crashes. "CK2 has stopped working". The items you propose were attempted and the result is unchanged. I hope that helps clarify.

What if you run ck2.exe directly, skipping the launcher, does that run OK?

Skip step one as it's obviously OK.

Alright then, continue through the other 3 links I listed please.

I assume you still have set the .exe files to run as the Admin user?

Is your Steam installation under the system path c:\program files\ ? If so try copying the whole CK2 directory from under there to a new place like c:\games\ck2\. Then create a text file userdir.txt in that CK2 directory with just a dot (period, full stop) in it. Now run ck2.exe from that new place.

2nd link no effect (reinstalls 2010 version)
3rd link re-installs the Directx saying at the end that the current directx is equal to or greater version than the one im trying to install
4th link (the one if the 3rd doesn't work as per your instructions) also has no effect

Its a gamers gate version of the game. The game is located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II

Looking at the end of your dxdiag.txt up there, you have some severe Windows problem it seems. You are getting crashes in all sort of apps, including Windows Explorer, and ismagent.exe which seems to be to do with the Intel appstore.

Did you visit the Windows Update site and allow it to apply every update it wants to?

I have the same issue. The launcher does not work, but the game itself does, except no DLCs or mods work. I've done everything mentioned in this thread, but no luck.

I finally found out what's wrong. The game won't start in full screen mode. I had to change the setting to fullScreen=no in the settings.txt file.
My display resolution is 1366x768px. I have no idea why it can't be run full screen.

The game runs pretty smoothly, with a little nuisance, the windowed mode does not show the game screen all the way down, there's several pixels cut off from the bottom of the screen, as a result, the buttons at the bottom seem cut off.

Severe Windows problem? Seems to run perfectly on all fronts... I did update Windows Update fully as well. I thought EU4 was using the same engine?
Very similar, yes. Odd indeed.

Do you have access to another machine to try CK2 on?

Okay, sorry bout that, I just thought that I should share how I finally able to play the game, in case someone is experiencing the same problem. Won't happen again.
I understand, I'm not telling you off. It's just that when people say "I have the exact same problem" it is almost always not the case, or it may be the same symptom but a different cause. Then I have to run two separate support efforts interleaved in one thread as each person responds in turn, and it gets confusing for everyone.
