You do understand that pre-order DLC/bonuses are the bonus for buying the game full price, right? There's a fairly big 2nd hand games market that gives £0 to publishers/devs, so there's a move to reward people who buy new copies.

What? Where is this "large" second hand pc game market?

Well, I'm thinking that this could be good. From what have been said so far things like the capi-building that was added in Vicky Revolutions and the missions and decisions from In Nomine for EU3, you know the real reasons to buy the expansions, would be the type of things that would be needed to be added in the patches for free, thanks to the huge impacts they have on the game. And they can continue to do these feature heavy patches thanks to the revenue from the dlc's. If it's done this way this idea is glorious for all and every one.

Its funny.. We did small downloadable expansions long before dlc was a common word.

Armageddon is a great example of what we aim for.
it's the wording. DLC has a bad connotations of being "fluff" or "power-up" stuff that has a disproporitate pricepoint cost; if you bought all the content seperatly that would make up a typical expansion, people tend to pay 2x-5x as much. Now I understand that one might need to raise the prices indivisually (as less people will likely buy everything and you need to make more money that way), but people will think the DLC will be overpriced for its content. This isn't your fault entirely; DLC has become a dirty word because of the way its been used by other companies.

Things I find encouraging about the recent changes around Paradox:
  1. An admission that quality can be better
  2. A commitment to higher quality in the future
  3. A multi-month external beta for CK2
  4. A promise of more direct communication with developers
  5. Continued support for those of us that opt out of expansions
Things that I'm not totally sure of but don't necessarily find to be malevolent:
  1. Rewarding early adopters while permanently excluding late adopters from full perks
  2. Miniature instead of "hefty" expansions
  3. Excluding people that pre-order from beta testing (is this confirmed?)
I'd be leery of paying for a DLC that consists of work a modder could have done. With a little elbow grease, I could rollback the start date by modding the history files, refine character images to be more historically accurate, refine dynastic details for Hungary during the 1200s, etc. I probably couldn't make Muslim nations playable or include naval combat. Larger expansions always had something in that "I can't do it myself" category; I simply hope that these mini-expansions do the same.

The only problem is your assumption that "normally" beta testing comes standard with pre-orders. I know some companies do that, but Paradox doesn't (and probably never will), and for good reason.
Note that I listed this as something I'm "not totally sure of but don't necessarily find to be malevolent." :) If you're talking about changing business as usual, and those changes include aspiring for higher quality and rewarding early adopters, then beta testing for those that pre-order should be under consideration. I don't mean to imply that it's unequivocally a good idea.

Just PLEASE Darkrenown, Johan or someone of the devs, say something to reassure the modders and those who live on mods.

PLEASE give us an example on how the "multiple free patches" and "small dynamic add-ons" could exist without mining the possibility of modding !

Will there be a way for modders to bypass patches (at least minor patches) and downloadable content ? Or should there be a new mod patch for every patch, or a mod version for every DLC combination ? Or people who wants to play a certain mod should have X DLC installed, and Y DLC disabled ?

PS Unlikely many of the posters here, I don't believe you're trying to screw us, I would have pre-ordered the game anyway, and I'm quite confident from what I see from the screenies and from the fact that betatesting will go on for 5 months before release. CKII will be great. But it will be a pity if it will mean the end of Paradox Games' modability.

please just tell me this is going to be on steam, im sick of gamersgate and is buggy'ness. i made the mistake of prerdering sengku on gamersgate, and then on release steam had it for 30% off, out of blue, this isnt going to happen to CKII is it? i love you guys and everything but i felt stabbed in my wallet and it was probably stated somewhere, but not enough!

Aye, there's an entire thread about it called "Pre-Orders", but the Devs have smartly not responded to it and probably won't.. Overall there's been no official dev comment on whether or not Pre-Orders will grant Beta Access (And looking at past history it probably won't), however, with this new direction of the way they are going to handle pre-orders, it doesn't hurt to be optimistic I guess, lol.. ;).

This release better not be like Victoria 2 or HoI3, I bought both on day 1 (stupidly, never having bought a day 1 game before) and found out if I had waited a year I coulda bought HoI3 plus 2 expansions for 30 bucks, rather than HoI3 for 50 plus 40 for 2 expansions... Victoria 2 still is unplayable unless you know nothing of history, but then you could play a funner ahistorical game.

If the patches are going to be like the old expansion packs, adding in new features or code then thats awesome, and the dlc will just add things, like if you buy this you can build this shit and if you buy this you can use this gov type? Cool, I guess.

edit: this dlc stuff sounds just like stuff modders do for free... hmm.....

So if you want to buy the box physical copy, you pay more, get less, have to pay for things digital buyers get for free, dont get 'true fan' status and are subsequently restricted access to forum content and otherwise discriminated against under the new communication segregation and still have to wait an extra week or two to be able to play it for the post office to do its job.

So the only way to get it would be to pre-order it twice? so its just rewarding the rich for happening to be rich.
Second-Hand buyers already have incentive to re-buy the game, I had a second hand copy of EU3complete. My neighbor bought it and didnt like so gave it to me, but eventually i had to buy the chronicles so as to have access to the mod forum. Thats enought, adding in additional discrimination, so that paying customers only count if theyre there at the right time or buy it the right way isnt right. Might as well just charge five dollars or some other stupid amount for True Fan status as thats all it means, and atleast then it would be available for all.

please just tell me this is going to be on steam, im sick of gamersgate and is buggy'ness. i made the mistake of prerdering sengku on gamersgate, and then on release steam had it for 30% off, out of blue, this isnt going to happen to CKII is it? i love you guys and everything but i felt stabbed in my wallet and it was probably stated somewhere, but not enough!

...it was 20% not 30%.

Go back to sleep.
