My only concern is for the guys like me who can't preorder because they don't have any internet paiement method available to them.
I would be glad to pre-order at the local game shop but most of the time they don't have Paradox game and last 2 games I bought were English importation (I live in France). I manage to get a grip on the Steam Paradox Complete pack thanks to a friend but I don't see myself asking them each time I want to buy a new game.

So I'm wondering how this would work for guys like me.

About the play muslim in CK2, I'm pretty sure there will be a mod doing it 2 weeks max after it's out.

I said "games", not "PC games". Many big releases are cross platform so the pre order DLC model gets carried over to the PC version too, then the PC only developers join in both because people have come to expect it and it does help to have early sales. .

I presumed that we were discussing pc games because as far as I know paradox has released very few games for other platforms.

I think Google has a feature like paypal now too, Google Checkout, don't know if its any good. I'll give it a try when I get paid this week....

I have mixed feelings about this to be honest. On one hand I am saddened that one of the last companies that do actual worthwhile expansions are switching to DLC, and on the other I got a lot of respect for Paradox compared to say EA or Activision. Perhaps they will pull through and show that DLC can be something good and not just short of a money scam. I sincerely hope so.

You do understand that pre-order DLC/bonuses are the bonus for buying the game full price, right? There's a fairly big 2nd hand games market that gives £0 to publishers/devs, so there's a move to reward people who buy new copies.

You do understand that when I have bought the game this copy is mine, right? That means you are no longer entitled to any income from me reselling this particular copy on the second hand market.

I could see several reasons that you want people to preorder like piracy issues etc. but blaming the second hand market just don't make sense. And I don't like the feeling of being put to an ultimatum to preorder the game or not get some extra goodies.

The patch policy sounds great. I already consider many of your games worth paying double for compared to games from other companies and will happily consume any DLC:s you crank out to further support my favourite games. If this means they will get more after-release support and eventually come even closer to perfection it is a great thing. But I really hope there is nothing in here that will prevent me from picking up my old copy of CK2 20 years from now and play it in some emulator with all my DLC content (of course I will not sell it second-hand, was just kidding before, but the principle remains ).

You do realize paradox isnt the first company to be worried about pre owned copies rather than piracy?

Also P'dox isnt saying you cant sell the game on the second hand market. They just really don't want you to.

Personally I find this a lot worse than piracy as it has no probability of yielding income to the developers. But hey.

Offering some extra goodies (DLC?, special true fan forum status) that will only be available if you preorder. But hopefully you will at least make it possible to buy the in-game stuff later.

The pre-order incentives should be made available to pre-order people only. There is really nothing unethical or inappropriate about this.

How will Steam users be affected by this? I'd like to see CK2 available for preorder on Steam sometime later this year.

Most of the Paradox games I own were usually bought on sale as a part of a package deal.

No there is not, but if the preorder content is desirable enough that it will make people buy a new copy rather than a second-hand one then P might be shooting themselves in the foot here if people go and pirate the whole game instead when they realise there is no legal way to get the extra content.

And most Paradox games I have only picked up some time after release (but never on second-hand) and I would hate to miss out on some content in future games just because I was not aware of or interested in the game at launch. So yes, I do not like this to become a standard practice and I do not like attempts to limit resale value or reinstall possibilities in general.

But the more I think about it the more I realise that if P has game content that people would like to buy it would just be stupid to not to take their money so I guess any preorder content will become available later anyway and then that is not really a big deal. So hopefully the situation is rather that as a preorder bonus we just get an additional DLC included earlier than other people and that is of course only positive then.

Frankly, I don't know where you've gotten the idea that pre-orders = exclusive DLC. That has not been suggested.
