Good thing no one ever said that.

Things that I'm not totally sure of but don't necessarily find to be malevolent:
  1. Rewarding early adopters while permanently excluding late adopters from full perks
  2. Miniature instead of "hefty" expansions
  3. Excluding people that pre-order from beta testing (is this confirmed?)

If true, seems counter productive.

I don't know where anyone got that from, no one has actually said that. Besides Paradox don't do open betas anymore, they were ineffective. Instead they're using a mix of out-of-house QA testing and selected beta testers. So whether you'd pre-ordered the game or not doesn't have anything to do with whether you beta test it now, before they announced this.

Exactly.. I think people are just getting confused by the simple "pre-order" thread discussion that somehow started to go into here, and when people listed possible benefits they said beta testing hopefully.. Again, that is not something the Devs have officially stated, it's just pure community speculation, so please try to understand that.

As someone who follows Paradox for years and years, I am not having too much issues with this announcement, except for the DLC thing which I loathe (and will adress later) but who knows, maybe it wont be despicable as most other companies do it.

You folks say games like Victoria 2 were buggy on release? It was stable, and people clearly havent played Europa Universalis II, Hearts of Iron I or Victoria I when they were released, now THAT was buggy, to the point of being unable to play for more than 10 minutes (sadly i am not exagerating). Paradox clearly have the effort to make their games bug-free with the manpower\time they have, but they are too much complex so its understandable to slip bugs. The problem is when they dont listen to the community, which fortunately dont happen frequently (but yes, sometimes the WORK AS INTENDED answer feels like a slap in the face).

People who pre-order the game should have benefits (but you could say that the ability to play the game before folks who prefer to wait its is own reward), forum avatars and icons seems a good deal, exclusive forum seem unecessary but it wouldnt bother me, although I would miss some funny posts paradoxians are known to make.

Now to tackle the thing that bother me, DLC instead of expansions. Right now, there are some issues with the current expansion model, which hopefully will change with this modular system. Interface improvements SHOULD NEVER be "this version only" like it is now, and I welcome the change to make it work for everyone, even those with only the base game. The problem is exactly WHAT will be charged, and if some features that would make it on the release suddenly be stripped and sold as a bonus, something that most companies do and deny it vehemently. If thats not the case I welcome the change.

BUT I still wont preorder it, for monetary issues and the fact that although I have faith that paradox wont become EVIL, it stills need to polish their games on release more.

I think that most companies who let people in for beta testing when pre-ordering have twisted the meaning of beta testing. It is seen as some kind of reward instead of a responsible duty of really testing the game to boredom and giving feedback to the devs. I can assure you that I would have liked and enjoyed some of the games I have beta-tested (not necessarily Paradox) more if I hadn't been part of the beta. During the beta period it is just way too easy to exhaust yourself with a game (and its possible flaws).

Pre-ordering and beta testing a Paradox (in-house) game have nothing to do with each other. Betas for CK2 have been selected already and pre-ordering is not possible yet so how there even could be a link?

Just PLEASE Darkrenown, Johan or someone of the devs, say something to reassure the modders and those who live on mods.

PLEASE give us an example on how the "multiple free patches" and "small dynamic add-ons" could exist without mining the possibility of modding !

The modding community is very important to us, and we will take actions making sure that you will be able to do your thing. There will be triggers that tell you what DLC's someone has, and when you select to implement features from one set of DLC's, people who don't have those will still be able to play your mod, they just won't see the specific set of features that relies on the ones they don't have. So compatibility should be even less of a problem than it is now, because people can have any set of DLC's and if the mod is done right, it will work for everyone. We will have more information on this later on. Don't believe we have forgotten about you modders!

Love this new policy. Does the Vicky II expansion get included in this?

Sorry, no. It will not be modular.

[words] The problem is exactly WHAT will be charged, and if some features that would make it on the release suddenly be stripped and sold as a bonus, something that most companies do and deny it vehemently. If thats not the case I welcome the change. [words]

This we will not do. People have always accused us of it, and I don't think that will change, but we don't do this. We plan for the amount of features we will have time to implement and still polish during the development time we have allotted, and then we make those. Of course we will have more ideas than we can fit, and also ideas that we come up with during the development, or ideas we get from the forum. These three are things that will go in expansions/DLC's later.

Some people seem opposed to this new thing we are doing simply because we named the post-launch content "DLC". An expansion is also a DLC, it just means content that you download... Some people have been burned by some other companies, but please trust me when I say we came up with this as a good thing, a service to you. Not as a way of screwing you for cash. We hope to get your cash by making really good games and then add to them with interesting content later on that you feel is worth your money.

What? Where is this "large" second hand pc game market?

I said "games", not "PC games". Many big releases are cross platform so the pre order DLC model gets carried over to the PC version too, then the PC only developers join in both because people have come to expect it and it does help to have early sales.

Saying you can never take part in a beta test for their games if you pre order them seems like a really strange way to attract more pre-orders.

No one has said that, and it's in fact impossible since we select beta testers months before pre-orders start.

The actual question was will pre-ordering come with beta access, and the answer is no.

It should work fairly well. You can, for example, script in what order modules are loaded and also script certain things to only be used if a certain module is present. E.g. Perhaps you make a mod adding new buildings, you can have your Advanced flying monkey breeding pen only show up if the user has the Flying monkey attack module loaded.
