I bought this game earlier today, and I haven't been able to get the game to properly launch. After hitting play on the launcher, the game immediately goes to a black screen, which then freezes and the process must be ended manually from the task manager. However, the music plays, and continues to play until the program is terminated, and for some reason the volume mixer also freezes/refuses to open while the program is open.

After several attempts at troubleshooting, I noticed there was no CK2.exe file in Steam/SteamApps/common/Crusader Kings II. I removed all local content, through Steam and manually, and redownloaded through Steam several times, but the file is still nowhere to be found, even after disabling all firewalls and antivirus software. Steam also doesn't doesn't download the file when I verify the cache, again with all firewalls and antivirus disabled.

This is caused by the Comodo AV app. It has quarantined that file. Move it out of quarantine back to the Steam CK2 folder, and white-list that whole folder in Comodo.

Oh, I've just realised - did you literally mean ck2.exe ? Because the actual file is ck2game.exe ; there has been no ck2.exe for several versions.

I'm not using Comodo. I have AVG Free version, and the problem persists even with it disabled.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Several troubleshooting steps mentioned running ck2.exe in compatibility mode and none of them specified what version they were talking about, so I thought that was the problem. In any case, the game still freezes after hitting "play" on the launcher. However, reverting to version 1.111 and running ck2.exe in compatibility mode did actually let me launch the game, which then worked perfectly fine for the hour or so that I played it.

EDIT: After switching back to the newest version and putting CK2game.exe in compatibility mode AND 640x480 resolution, the launcher is really weird but the game itself is entirely playable.

That makes it sound like ck2.exe is whitelisted but ck2game.exe is not. I'd still suggest you whitelist it in AV and firewall, even though you got this issue with AV disabled.

So what's wrong with the launcher now?
