CK2 Dev Diary #15: Assorted cool things

Hello all, it’s time for another DD about <Secret DLC> and interesting 2.6 patch things! I am pre-writing this DD to be posted while I am on vacation, so I may or may not show up to answer questions when it goes live. Anyway, “today” I want to reveal a few cool but unrelated features and fixes we’ve made.

Let’s start with some rather old complaints! Flanders is now part of k_france. Wow! And on the subject of France, the AI king of France will no longer create the Kingdom of Aquitaine unless they are close to meeting the requirements of creating the empire of Francia. Barcelona and Trier are also in more logical places.

A little pet peeve I’ve had since playing Conclave was that the fact someone owes you a favor is a bit hard to see, so there is now an icon on a character’s portrait if they owe you one.

Speaking of favors, Muslims will be able to force Decadent relatives to shape up using favors now too.

Players with Horse Lords may have been annoyed at the number of clicks needed to pillage a holding, so instead of needing to continually decide to pillage, the decision is now a toggle rather than an action. Once you decide to pillage, buildings will be destroyed periodically until either the player decides to stop or the holding is destroyed. You can simultaneously pillage multiple holders per province too. The revolt risk has also been capped at 30% while the revolt size has been made more sensible (larger!).

Speaking of Nomads, when a non-nomadic realm conquers an empty province from a horde, the province now gains some revolt risk from Nomad Agitation. This effect remains until the nomads are pacified, either by constructing a Castle or City, or if Tribal by constructing at least 2 buildings. If a province has not been pacified upon succession it will break away and spawn a new Nomadic ruler.

And on the subject of Horse Lord things, the Silk Road has been extended by adding a new branch from Lut - passing through Rayy and Tabriz - to Trebizond, and the southern part of the Silk Road has been updated to also pass through Dhofar, Socotra, Busaso, and Taizz on the way to Alexandria.

Some new targeted decisions have been added in 2.6/<Secret DLC> too:
  • You may break non-aggression pacts, although this gives you a short truce with the other character.

  • You may cancel tributary status of your tribute-payers

  • Owners of <Secret DLC> may attempt to recruit prisoners who do not like their liege.

  • Owners of <Secret DLC> may ask their vassals individually to end their wars with each other, or force them to do so with a favor. When favors are not used, the vassal may accept or refuse or may accept in exchange for cash or gaining a favor from you. If the aggressor is asked to and agrees to end their war they are also barred from declaring new wars on your other vassals for a time.

  • Owners of <Secret DLC> may ask characters who are unlanded and unemployed to leave their court.

  • Owners of <Secret DLC> may ask their vassals to return to gavelkind succession, or force them to via a favor.

We have added around 50 new nicknames, here's a selection:

These images have been edited to fit together better, names are still in the regular places ingame

Another old annoyance, characters in the character finder now have icons to indicate if they will or will not move to your court, and another to show they are outside of Diplomatic Range:

A final neat thing, we have added a Continue button on the Launcher to load directly into your latest savegame.

These are not all the cool things we have added, of course, but it’s a nice selection for now I think. Next week I will still be on vacation, but I have pre-prepared another DD about torture and executions!

Nice additions, thanks, has the launcher had any other improvements? I like how the recent Paradox games divide the DLC's into categories.

How about seducing prisoners? Can you now click on the dungeon icon on prisoners to take you straight to their captor? I think I remember Groogy posting that he might add it. If you ask someone to leave your court, do their spouse and underage children also leave? How about opinion modifiers for alliances, assistance in wars and non-aggression pacts? I find it strange that the only time it happens is with the spouse visit NAP's, I don't like having no change of opinion for an alliance between characters. How about some kind of alert notification for possible NAP's? I find it hard to track renegotiable NAP's when one of the participants dies.

Apologies for all the questions, no rush, enjoy your holiday.

I just love the "Kick unemployed Courtier's" button. Kinda hated that we just had random people in are court, doing nothing. Thanks.
I wonder what will happen to them. Whether they are autokilled after a while or just send in circles between courts. Or the AI doesn't use the kick out useless people button.

Very nice. These are all welcome changes.

One comment about Flanders though, perhaps it could be de jure Frisia in the first two start dates and de jure France from 1066 onward.

Is the AI actually aware of this ? I.e, will it be progammed to build holdings as fast as possible when conquering an unsettled province ?

What i fear is that non-nomadic AI Kingdoms would keep losing their unsettled provinces because they don't know they are supposed to build on them to keep them, or they don't prioritize it...

I wonder what happens if your castle is half constructed when your ruler dies.
Doomed to forever wander the world, unloved and homeless, until the new and improved Black Death finds them...
Now you are making me feel bad about it. Which is ironic given how I in the past has solved this problem by using the kill command in the console...

Oh, yellowish skull! I wonder if that's from ilness-related deaths.

Otherwise, cool minor stuff. Me like! A lot of sensible little tweaks.

The construction is probably cancelled, I guess...
That would be my guess too---especially since that is what happens if you get raided while trying to construct a castle IIRC. Though it will lead to loads of "please don't die in the next few months" when the castle is nearing finished construction.

Hm, is there an icon showing that they will come to your court if bribed? Like that yellow thumb when inviting people to plots?

Personally, I'm just happy you guys are finally adding this stuff in. I know some people are upset it's taken awhile, but I bet most of the people here aren't developers. I bet if it was easy to add things into the game, it would have been added in ages ago.

Thanks for working on such awesome stuff! :D

One comment about Flanders though, perhaps it could be de jure Frisia in the first two start dates and de jure France from 1066 onward.

In the first start date Flanders should be a part of Neustria and Brabant a part of Austrasia; Frisia would be north of the Rhine and Meuse (except for Zeeland). In principle making Flanders a part of k_france is a good decision, there were also changes stated regarding Trier and Barcelona. Trier was a part of Lotharingia and ended up in Upper Lotharingia, Brabant OTOH was a part of Lower Lotharingia (like Köln and Kleve, but not Münster); though the stem duchies Upper and Lower Lotharingia (Lorraine) like most of the stem duchies gradually disintegrated into smaller territorial & dynastic entities.
Anyway let's see what they come up with; even with the possibility to change de jure liege in the history file, it's still hard to get the setup perfect for each start date.

Either keep d_holland and d_gelre de jure k_frisia for all start dates (and so keep a de jure k_frisia), or shift them to k_lotharingia (which for most start dates would be more accurate for d_brabant anyway). And/or a de jure k_frisia is creatable through a decision.

I got really excited thinking that this meant the Alans would get the Iranian portraits, only to realize that in the files, that name is Uyghur.

I mean, it's the bane of Rus and everything. Y u do dis?

No - Flanders was never part of the Kingdom of Magna Frisia or the Frisian stem duchy that suceeded it. Throughout the entire CK2 time period, it was always attached to West Francia/France, even if only de jure by the end.

How does this work when a vassal conquers nomadic realms? When I play as Kiva my vassals are expanding rapidly into nomad land and I can nothing do about that. And now I also get the revolt risk? I am skeptical

Nice! A feature that a smaller realm can off tribute would be nice. This could shield small realm a little bit.

I like that you can make people leave the court. I too would like to know where they go. I use the option to send men to holy orders often, but the ones that want to become monks and stick around annoy me. I wish they would go to the local bishop's court instead.
