I dunno. At this point, considering EU:Rome and HOI3, I'd be very nervous CK2 would suck.

Rome was not such a disaster as most think .... especially with VV. Also it was an experiment I think from PI, as to whether a mix between EU and CK was possible.

I just think the character part was too shallow and the scope of the game was too limited.

HOI3 was trying to please too many people at once and rushing it through.

CK is still very much a niche game. All they would need to do, is build on the concept of CK, and improve AI, graphics and implement missing features, as well as open more of the code to modding (which already exists in EU games).

If Paradox just doesn't take the game into a whole new direction, I can't see it failing. But that is just my optimistic opinion :D

I would like to see CK ---> CK2 go in the same direction as EU2 ---> FTG. The overall game is relatively the same, but the game candy is much better!!!!! PI can easily do the same thing by adding in the things that would make this game really great (including an enhanced DVIP)!! Just ask the users and modders for input.

FTG is not developed and by Paradox, they just publish it.

Paradox no longer works with the EU-engine (the engine used for games like EU2, CK, HoI2, Victoria)

I would rather see a CK2 with the new Clausewitz engine, since that would give modders so much more modding possibilities.

I totally agree with you Veldmaarschalk. They should basicly port the game into the clausewitz engine and in the process better the game. Stop instant realm disintigration few years after you press start. Make some of the other laws useful rather than just feudal contract. Also the strategy part of the game could use something new, maybe becoming more detailed or something. The character system must be treated with care though as that it was made the ck game so special.

Edit: forgot to mention that they should try to maintain the dark humor they had in many of the event description. So instead of tearing your hair off and reloading when your monarch becomes crazy you will simply laugh and try to cope with this interesting development.

Don't be afraid of losing the humour, just take a look at some of the new HTTT events.

Event that can happen on heir death:
A: "Find solace in the arms of the Lord"
B: "Find solace in the arms of the maid"

:D

When suggestion a simple port, it should include some of the really cool new developments in later titles, like Rebels with a cause, strength of heir, having different vassals back different heirs (with a good chance of civil war if you back an unwanted one), province and national decisions, tribes/pagans/republics playable (with different styles of ruling the nation, a bit like it was done in Rome) etc.

There are sooo many cool things that could be added to the game to make it absolutely magnificent. And I believe that all the problems with HOI/EU/Vicky series where some havee trouble dealing with the transition from deterministic/event-driven game to a more sand-box game, CK never had that many events that were specific. So the transition to the new engine and way of development should be easy.

As long as they keep the basic game the same as before and just fix bugs/features and add new cool stuff, they can't go wrong ... at least in my opinion :) ... and with more and better modding possibilities, the sky is the limit :D

CK is pretty sandboxy, yeah.

I'd really like Paradox to take advantage of some of the design technology they didn't have when CK was made. Provincial and national decisions are a good example. Any CK2 should probably also have character decisions, to make the game somewhat less event-driven.

Rome, for all its flaws, also had a lot of worthy features related to internal politics that are worth picking up (especially in Vae Victis). The system of character goals it had, for example, would add a lot to the politics of a court.

How does this affect a CK 2 announcement? Is it impossible now?

No, don't think so, since:

NEW YORK – January 18, 2010 – Signaling the start of a week laden with announcements, Paradox Interactive is proud to announce - Achtung Panzer: Kharkov 1943, a new war strategy title that places players in the heart of the Kharkov Defense Operation during World War II

And this game is only published by Paradox, not developed by them.

How does this affect a CK 2 announcement? Is it impossible now?

Nope ... someone asked if these were part of the "big 3" announcements to be made at PIC. Shams said it wasn't, and that they would make announcements all week.

Still think we will be kept guessing about CK2 until Friday.

So was CK wasn't it? Didn't they give the engine to outside developers to make?

Which means that everyone may be offending everybody on the Paradox programming team when they tell them that CK was their best game. Afterwards, of course, they made the 'dynamic' clauswitz engine, which upset alot of people, and then they made Rome which tried to be a bit like CK but misssed the point.

hmm

Initially yes but the outside developer bailed or something and forced Paradox to finish development. The patches and DV expansion was all Paradox.

If Paradox were to eventually release CK II, I would buy three copies on the release day. A digital download from GG for me to play and then two physical copies if they were available.

One of these copies I would place in a time capsule, bury and then leave written instructions for finding its location in a safe deposit box. Then, when I died, my heirs would gain access to said box and search out the game. I would leave tantilizing clues in the wording of the letter, such as "Prepare to embark on a journey to the greatest treasure mankind has ever borne witness to."

The second physical copy I would attempt to, somehow, launch into space in The hope that an advanced alien culture would detect the craft and decipher the game. It would be a wonderful thing to have the first open contact between man and extraterrestrials arrive in the form of an invitation to a CK II multiplayer game.

 Quality post. I especially like the alien part, maybe they'll think we're a feudal society :D.
