Sword of the Samurai... An old Microprose PC game...

Your object was to become the Shogun of medievel Japan... To do so, you had to create a dynasty.

I don't know how many games I was PRAYING for my "mature adult" (meaning about to be menopause) wife to give birth to a son...

I supect that I will have times I will be doing the same in CK...

PLEASE let her have a son this time... Daughter again? She's 35 now... Time to call in the assasins and marry that comely 16 year old lass from, anywhere...

Yes, you will be doing that in CK too. CK characters seem to be a little more fertile though so you usually have a son or two. But often they die before inheriting the throne and then your wife is too old to have more children and...well you get the picture. :D

Ahh yes I remember that game, super fun. Even playing CK, I often expect a mini-game to pop up where I have to save my wife from bandits or fight a dragon or something.

I wonder how hard it would be to make a Sword of the Samurai-esque game with the CK engine? Probably not very...

Sword of the Samurai...wasn't that also the new name for the classic Shogun boardgame from Milton Bradley?

Anyway, CK reminds me of the old KOEI games...which is a really good thing. :)

That makes me (yet again) think of another classic game...Defender of the Crown...no dragons or inheritance there, though...

No, it was renamed "Samurai Swords". Almost the same thing, but not quite... ;)

I haven't played CK yet, as I'm still struggling to get my order to go through, but I consider that to be a very favorable comment to make. Genghis Khan was/is my all-time favorite NES game...

I played Romance in the Three Kingdoms and Bandit Kings for the most part...good old games... :)
[/nostalgia mode]

Unfortunately, I don't have the game yet either (sorry if I gave you that impression, my previous post was probably a bit unclear), but all my impressions (from AAR:s and other comments) point toward a gameplay that resembles the KOEI games quite a bit...I just pray to whatever gods there are that my expectations will be fulfilled...a combination of KOEI and the old Pirates! game would be more or less perfect for the dynasty management...

Me: If you could just have had a SON that lived, we wouldn't be having this discussion, would we?

Her: If your flaccido domingo had fired some Y's instead of X's, we wouldn't be having this discussion either...

If only Henry VIII had high school biology class knowledge of genetics and sex determination and known it was HIS fault...

There'd be fewer dead women and England might still be Catholic...

Yep, I'd say that there's certainly a flavour of the old KOEI games in there - although it's so long since I played a 'Romance' game that I can't remember the details :)

Overall I'm loving CK so far, although I suspect I'll only really get into it when the autosave function becomes a bit more reliable - EU2 remains one of the best games I've ever bought, something I'm not sure I can say about any other game of recent times. CK certainly seems to have more subtle strategies and some unique elements, but it remains to be seen if the dynamic approach will equal the 'discovery' approach you get when playing a country who's history you know little of.

If there's ever a CK 2 I'd love to see some things from another classic old game 'Balance of Power'. Admittedly I was terrible at it and my games always ended in mutual destruction, but some of the indirect ways of intimidating your neighbours into doing what you want would port across quite nicely into CK.

That could almost be a Python sketch...all it needs is Terry Jones as the wife and, say, Michael Palin as the husband, as few reindeers, one or two catfish/and or SPAM, and then the colonel butting in to end the sketch.

Well, CK reminds me another game I had bought at 1990, if I remember correctly....
It was called "Medieval Lords" by SSI.
Excellent game, countless hours spent trying to rule mediaval europe :)
At that time it was very difficult to find a game of such kind...

BTW I had another SSI game called "Storm across Europe" which was very similar to Hearts of Iron. Sometimes I wonder if the Paradox guys had played those games and got some ideas.... :D
