The main problem with an online game like this, is that you risk loosing everything you have spent hours or days building up.

If you were the emperor, you would know that all the vassals would be conspiring against you, as would most of the external realms. While that could be a fun prospect, if you had spent weeks getting to that position, it would suck to loose it all because of what other players did.

There is a reason why games like WoW don't let your characters die permanently. People hate loosing what they have spent so much time gathering.

I still prefer my CK2 as single player game.

But the thought of an online game where hundreds of players scheme against each other and have immersive power-plays etc. is pretty cool. I just don't think the concept holds.

Thats a good point, maybe it could be solved due the fact that you can "live" trough your next relative.
And yes the emperor could only survive with a good family/gilde/clan, but i don´t think that would be such a big issue. that would be a feature not a bug :D

And thats why i like this idea so much, real diplomacy!

The problem is that if your next relative is the court jester in Iceland, and you are the King of France. If you lost all your titles, it would be game over.

If it is an online game where you pay monthly dues, people would not want to play if they continously had to start all over.

And of course there are technical issues like the fact that there can only be a limited number of players on each server, and it sort of would have to be turn based to work.

oh tempest you are my dreamkiller ;)

but you´re maybe right, the problems : what happens to my realm when i´m logged out and what happens when my noble dies etc these issues would be very difficult to solve.

@the_hdk
i don´t have a complete concept either but i think everyone could imagine how great it would be if the nobles in ck react like real humans

that depends it would suck if really childish people join and spoil the fun by destroying everything others build on purpose

I used to play WoW and EO ... things might start out well enough ... but once a title is established griefers will arrive and send everything to hell. I don't know how you translate this game to an online gaming format and prevent griefing without destroying the game. Perhaps people smarter than I am have some ideas. I can tell you though that the greater the opportunity to destroy your hard work the greater the effort that will be given to do so ... even at the expense of the griefer. The best thing that CK would have going for her is the relatively small market to which it would appeal -- but it would take only one member from Something Aweful to convince people that this is a great place to create another Goon Squad spin-off and wreak havoc.

In the context of what he said, it seems clear to me that Fredrik was thinking of an MMORPG on the order of World of Warcraft. I can't blame him -- why should P'dox be satisifed with their niche when they can make as much money as Blizzard has? But honestly -- to make something like this from Crusader Kings? I don't think so. . . . :D

It's a good interview, by the way. Full of honest and direct statements about the company and its aims that one rarely sees in English-language interviews.

Very nice article indeed!

A CK Online could be fun, but not sure what it really would be like. Would it be a casual game you log in every day or few to react to what has happened and taking few actions? Or would it be a game on front of which you spend few hours at a time? Somehow I'm thinking more of the former and doing my bit equally well from my mobile phone or PC.

I too like the idea of a dynasty-building game of this sort, but the problem I have with this and really with all such multi-player continuing games is the problem of being "required" to play with a certain frequency so I don't fall hopelessly behind. It would be nice if you could hand your domain over to the a.i. for a while, come back, and have a hope of not seeing it reduced to tatters.

And as for a game you could play on a mobile phone, that would be awesome. CK doesn't really depend on very fancy graphics anyway, so why not?

Well... I do not play any on line games, and that's not going to change. So, thank you, but no.
I would just like a CK2 PC game.

edit: as for an interview: my german is so weak, so I could not understand everything, is there english (aka - modern esperanto) version?

I'm with WanderingKnight.
I'm not sure how the concept of Crusader Kings can be poured into an online form, but the idea does not really appeal to me.

So, no, thank you. :)

I would like to but I think that wouldn't be CK anymore, The player will begin as a poor countryman and learn the basis of this game (toturial), then some event that would change your life (like a battle destroyed your village, a miracle which saved your family, or seeing philosophers debate)(should be a choice for the player), and through missions you become a warrior, priest or diplomat or else. Players then will build up their attribute & skill then hope some lord(also players) will reconize his/her ability and enploy him/her to recieve bonus on stats.

To prevent court members from rebelling every single day, a penalty would apply instantly to the "traitor", and anyone within the same country/realm will recieve a bonus for defeating him/her and his/her troops(AI), but the "bonus" and "penalty" depends on the lord's BB. Lords who lose their fief can seek asylum and the person who sheltered him can declare war on the person who "stole" territory from others, and will be awarded after the annexed country got liberated.
