Steam

Do you have mods enabled? No

Have you tried verifying your game files (Steam only)?
Yes

How much "pain" is this causing you?
8

Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
First off, there are the "So-and-so became your [council position]. He/she cannot be fired for 25 years". The thing is that there is no explanation, no reason given, it just happens out of nowhere with no user interaction. That's bad enough, but if they replace a councillor, then the former councillor will be mad at you for it. This is absurd. Why in the hell are they angry at me for something I had nothing to do with? Not to mention there's no reason WHY this is happening in the first place!

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
I don't even know what triggers this balnoey.

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?

This has happened a few times to me too, and it's bloody annoying. Best as I can tell, here's what's happening:
  1. You have a direct vassal with a particular title, and you have a feudal contract with them.
  2. That vassal then loses a war which causes them to lose that title.
  3. The person (who is now, but wasn't previously your direct vassal) who takes that title applies their existing feudal contract, which wasn't with you, to you (with their new title).
  4. Because their existing contract had 'guaranteed council rights', and this has been copied over to you, they then use that to take a council spot.
It gets even more annoying if they'd already modified their feudal contract with their previous liege, because it'll claim that it's already been modified and so won't let you change it 'again' now.

Not sure if it's 'any war' that causes a change in who your direct vassal is, or if it's only one where the person who takes over the title was an existing direct vassal of your previous direct vassal (i.e. who's just lost the title in question). Similarly, not sure if it's just certain types of these wars (pretty sure I've seen it after tyranny wars, not sure about claim wars).

What should be happening is the same as for normal inheritance: the new direct vassal gets a new feudal contract copying the contract terms from the previous holder of the title.

Any vassal with a weak hook on you can do this. Best not to let people get hooks, but yes the event does a terrible job of explaining WHY it's happening. (and can you buy off a hook like you could favors in CK2, or otherwise neutralize it? Haven't seen an option)

Thank you, this would explain why this is happening! I reported a similar bug, for me this is not only happening with council positions, but also with all other feudal contracts. They just change silently and I'm 100% sure that no vassal had a hook on me, if that's the case you actually get a proper message explaining the situation. Every time I go into my overview I have some vassals who pay no taxes or have other rights granted that they shouldn't have and I always take the tyranny penalty changing it back.....

This has nothing to do with hooks, like some people are saying!

Can confirm : as Emperor of GB, I revoked the Kingdom of Scotland and a Duke did this. In any case, the Duke has a right to be in the Council of Scotland, not GB.
Furthermore, the privilege guarantees a seat in the council, not the seat of their choosing.

I suggest amending the thread title, if that is possible.

I had a powerful vassal die and I suddenly found byself with an extra 30 Vassals! No idea which of them are new but saw on the opinion interface that many of my vassals suddenly had 'council rights guranteed' repeated 5/6 times on their opinion modifier. so it'd just appear as:
-council rights guranteed' +5
-council rights guranteed' -5
-council rights guranteed' -5
etc.

Then had the same message as above about them joining the council.

I can't even seem to get rid of them when I try to grant vassals to others. So at the moment stuck 22 vassals over the limit with them causing chaos to my Ironman save.

I have been having issues with this as well. Vassals have been giving themselves guaranteed council rights without any notice to me and then take a councilor position. I checked the feudal contract of one of these vassals (he was a duke and I was an emperor) and he was exempt from taxes and levies, too.

Don't allow people to get hooks on you. This is not a bug but yeah, it's annoying and should be documented better. The game should definitely tell you why it's happening.
