Please explain the issue you experienced in the most condensed way possible
My genius child character got pensive as a trait, so picked an education in stewardship. I had a guardian who was also a genius and was a Fortune Builder. At age 16, I ended up getting Conscientious Scribe instead. I checked multiple times and I did not forget to set my education focus.

Please explain how to reproduce the issue
Age 0 character, who is a genius, hale, and comely as Byzantine emperor. Invited a genius to my court, converted him, and became my teacher. Picked stewardship education as soon as I got pensive as a trait at age 3. 13 years later I received a different education trait.

Is there anything else you think could help us identify/replicate the issue?
I was sick 2-3 times without a court physician. But I was hale and had strong blood via decisions.

I have attached a save game
Yes

Your education focus must have invalidated before the correct event got picked. The game chooses which event gets fired based on the kid's current focus, with learning being the back up if they have no focus.

So it's most likely a bug then? When this first happened I had initially thought that I had forgotten to choose a focus. But looking at an earlier save, I had clearly chosen stewardship the moment had I gotten pensive. Hopefully this gets patched because it's literally a waste of time waiting for your character to reach 16, only to get screwed by a bug.

I had the same bug. I started the game in 1.7 as a child. The game patched to 1.7.1 and when he grew up, he got conscientious scribe instead of diplomacy education trait.

Pulling up a save from age 6, where I had chosen diplomacy education already and playing from there also caused the same bug.

I don’t remember if I tried loading before age 6 and switching education away and to diplomacy to check if that fixed the bug.

I started a new game post 1.7.2 and this time, when playing as a child, I aged up with lvl 4 diplomacy education trait.

The patches were fairly minor, but it’s possible they somehow invalidated the saved education focus for player. Do you know when you started that save?

I started playing as the Byzantines in this playthrough last week (10/3 - 10/7), so for sure after the 1.7.2 update. And it was a first for me experiencing this bug in any playthrough. And I couldn't change my education since the game will only allow one choice after it's been made.

It allows you to flip back and forth before age 6, I believe.

I wonder if it has to do with saving, if there’s a brief moment where a trait is assigned visually but the education isn’t actually assigned.

I don’t know. I notice that if I reload saves a lot (because of save scumming or unexpectedly short play times), I end up with children with extra personality traits. I wonder if the two bugs are related.
