I play with a friend on multiplayer at some point during our game play usually around the 1000 year mark but not always either his game or mine will CTD with no error messages.
Steps to reproduce the issue.
Play the game with a friend online get to around the 1000 year mark or play for an extended period of time together and the game will CTD with no error message.
