CK II - 2.8.2 game crashing when loading or starting a game.

Okay so, let's try to troubleshoot this :

• First of all, please mention the OS you are using
• Are you running the game in fullscreen, windowed or borderless ?
• What language are you using ?
• Does the crash happen *all the time* when starting a new game ?
• Does the crash happen *all the time* when loading a game ?
• Does it crash when loading a pre-2.8.2 save or a 2.8.2 save or both ?
• When does it crash during the loading ? (what does it says in the loading bar)
• If you get the crash, please go to C:\Users\[USER]\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II zip the "logs" folder and send it here along with a dump file generated in the "dumps" folder (same path)

Also if you have installed a gaming VPN app called Evolve, or the MSI Gaming App, disable it as it clashes with this game.

You should also update that nVidia driver

It's a bit of a long shot, but since it seems to crash at graphics loading, you can try the following (it may fix it, but no guarantee) :

• Deactivate all your mods if you had any active
• Close Steam
• Go to : C:\Users\[USER]\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II
• Delete your "gfx" folder
• Launch Steam
• Launch the game without any mod
• If it works and you were using mods, try activating the mods then. If it starts crashing again, then it's one of your mod being the problem

After some investigating, we're thinking mod issue. Something else you can try :

• Go to : C:\Users\[USER]\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings II\interface
• Backup the file called "game_rules.txt" (as in make a copy of it in on your desktop or somewhere else)
• Then, delete "game_rules.txt"
• Game Hopefully shouldn't crash then

Have you got any suggestions to fix it? as I have tried yet it still doesn't work.

So, 2 things.

First of all, we've been working on a fix, and we believe we have the issue cornered, so we're preparing another patch to address this. I cannot give an ETA on it yet.

Second, the only thing I can recommend for you at this point, is to nuke it from orbit and try fresh :

• Deactivate all mods
• Verify Files (right click in Steam Library -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Files)
• Then, uninstall the game
• Once uninstalled, go to "C:\Users\arthur.bialecki\Documents\Paradox Interactive" and completely delete the whole "Crusader Kings II" folder
  • NB : make a backup of your saves if you want to, but do not put them back there until everything works fine
• Now your game should be uninstalled and the My Documents folder should be completely gone
• At this point, reboot Steam
• Reinstall CK2
• Verify Files again, just for added safety
• Launch the game WITHOUT MODS NOR BACKED UP SAVES
• If it works from there, try adding the saves, trying with these, and only then you can check with your mods

At this point, if it still doesn't work, I'd recommend reverting back to 2.8.1 branch (Properties -> Betas -> Select branch) and waiting until our next patch (2.8.3 I guess ?) drops in a bit
