I need some advice from the fellow CK2 fans. I love the HoI and Vicky-series, but never got into EU and CK for some reason. I played the CK2 demo and gave up after an hour. A game of such depth doesn't work too well within the scope of a demo.

So I decided to wait for a price drop + the eventual handful of patches and the arrival of mods.
This time has come now and I'm wondering if the game will suit my taste.

Since I'm an avid mod-user (vanilla PI games are decent, but never spectacular), I need to know if there are any worthwhile mods out there. Unfortunately PI has the policy of locking the mod-forums for non-customers. I'm most interested in the Game of Thrones-mod, is that any good as of yet? What other major mods are out there?
(based on the number of threads and comments, the mod-activity is lower than Vicky2 and that's exactly a modding paradise)

Will CK2 appeal to HoI and Vicky-fans? Is the learning curve as steep as the impression I got from the demo? Thanks for your help!

You can't go wrong for 10 bucks. CK2 is great and well worth the money. There are plenty of mods that you will enjoy as well. Like all PI games the game is easy to mod yourself and the console allows you to do plenty of things.

I never played Vicky but I play HoI3 and I love this game.

For 10 bucks though I would recommend this to pretty much everyone. The DLC's will cost you another $10-20. You may not buy them right away but you will probably fall in love with this game and end up buying them. A new one comes out tomorrow also I believe.

I'm most interested in the Game of Thrones-mod, is that any good as of yet? What other major mods are out there?
(based on the number of threads and comments, the mod-activity is lower than Vicky2 and that's exactly a modding paradise)

It is a lot higher than in Vicky2, at least as far as major overhaul/total conversion mods are concerned. In general, modding seems to be less buggy here and mods are less focused on fixing inherent issues and more focused on bringing different worlds/settings to life or adding to immersion and balance by introducing new features (more akin to EU3). There are several major mods that add kingdoms, events, character development and such as well as Total Conversions for Game of Thrones (which is already VERY well developed), a quasi-historical Arthurian era, and so on. Several fantasy settings (including Elder Scrolls) are in the works.

Will CK2 appeal to HoI and Vicky-fans? Is the learning curve as steep as the impression I got from the demo? Thanks for your help!
I think that's a yes. One thing that I believe might bug players of HoI and Vicky is that, while one is still basically playing the "guardian angel" of the current monarch and/or their dynasty, one's control over most matters is less direct. You need to be able to identify the cogs and gears (the right people) that make your kingdom work (i.e. who is powerful, who do you need to have on your side, who can you exploit?) and keep their interests in mind when making decisions. Coming from HoI - where everything is under your control - or Vicky - where you still have a lot of say in what your nation is doing - that might take some getting used to, but the emergent storytelling and the strategic challenge and the sheer fun of it all are worth it.

Lol!

I'd go for it for the base game, but if you like mods you NEED this game. There a few really good. Particularily if you like Grargh Martin.
I don't see how aliens fit in this game...

Ck2 for 10 dollars is a steal. I bought for regular price at around 40 dollars, and I still don't regret buying it "off-season". The different overhaul mods make it playing CK2 worth it.

Re; mods. Many like Prince and the Thane and CK2+, however these tend to introduce mechanics, traits, etc. which make it worse for newer players. They aren't essential; I never really took to them, but they're very popular, so try them when you're familiar. Project Balance is what I use in all my games, as vanilla is very unbalanced in favor of several blobs (France, Fatimids, occasionally ERE, the HRE...). I would also recommend Titular Title Generator, Somewhat More Historic, Better Looking Characters, and Vassalize Holy Orders as Jerusalem as minor mods to supplement your game experience. However, beware as many mods makeover maps which can make them conflict with SWMH and many mods have integrated versions of BLC.

Once you're an experienced player, try Lux Invicta. A total overhaul transplanting Crusader Kings into an alternate universe. I could sum it up as every single duchy independent, with a few small kingdoms (like Neustria, Francia), a few single-province empires (Holy Roman Empire, SPQR, Imperium Romanum), and everybody having a different religion (Sol Invictus, Mithra, Mithraic-Christianity, Indo-Hellenic...)

If it is indeed on sale for 10 bucks I'm tempted to buy an extra copy to give away. Any idea what would be a good idea to give it away for?
Someone who writes good AARs?
Someone who makes good mods for another paradox game?

Oh and the collection is on sale for 12.5... it'd be a much better idea to get that. Or you can grab the two expansions as well (which is basically all the important content for 16.25 total). I.e. 12.50+2.5+1.25=16.25. For that price the only thing you miss out on is some minor graphical packs, some unit sprite packs and some music (although you already get 70 or more minutes of music anyway). The next dlc coming out is also rather irrelevent as you can see from certain posts on the forum.

BTW when did this price drop happen? Do I have 16 hours to get down to the bank to put extra money on my debit card?. It's probably at least a 24 hour sale so if it started within an hour of the time this thread started I should have time.

I say NO! 10€ is just not enough for such a good game. I call it stealing. Wait for it to be 20€ instead ;)
Or you could buy two copies and give one away. Either way that's 20 euro they get (especially if it's someone who wouldn't otherwise have heard of paradox games but might be interested... e.g. a total war or civ 4/5 gamer, you could for example get them to try the demo and if they like it then give it to them, if they don't then find someone who does. That person might then go on to buy future dlc)

If what you seek is a popularity simulator, then CKII is the right thing for you. Imprison your pregnant wife, assassinate your cousin the King of LaLa Land, go to war with your brother -- do what you must to win the favor of key characters in the game. You decide how well liked you want to be.

If you seek an engrossing & challenging historical war game, then I recommend that you stay away from CKII.

There is certainly plenty of fun to be had in ck2 even if your only aim every game is to expand as much as possible.
