So, I noticed that three of the new traditions were "Harmony", "Supremacy", and "Purity". Sound familiar to anyone?

I actually dont mind if developers take inspiration in other games, if it fits nicely in PDX games, why not?
Besides, today there is so many games or other similar media and to come out with something new and different (and useful) is really hard.

Honestly, there's only so many words.

Endless Space had the Harmony faction, Fallout 3 had Project Purity. And so on.

Wait a minute... 3 traditions share names with 3 beyond earth affinities? 3
endless space 1 had harmony? endless space 1 is getting a sequel endless space 2 1+2 = 3
Fallout 3 had purity? 3

Considering most paradox RTS game are euphemistically called map painting simulators I'm surprised to hear that, honestly.

The point I was making is Sci-fi like all other genres is derivative

Not to say that its a bad thing, but tropes/designs and ideas get reused and recycled and tooled into different franchises.

look at LOTR, Warhammer and Warcraft in fantasy.

Yeah it is and it seems there is nothing we can do about it. Human fantasy has reached its limit no new ideas. Even every second movie now is a reebot.

Though I cant blame PD as for example one race of the Game Endless Space 2 looks exactly like the soldiers from the OP image of the sumpremacists even their triangle like symbol and color design is very similar.

There's a lot of crossover with terms, designs and other stuff between the space 4x games out there. In this instance, I think it's pretty easy to independently land on the same kinds of terms/ideas. I personally can't think of many other words you could pick either.

And really, aside from maybe Purity, Harmony and Supremacy really don't seem to have much in common with their incarnations in Beyond Earth.

Indeed, tot really that many alternatives to chose from when you simplify the narrative paths to it's simplest forms. Could also accuse civilization 5 team Fireaxis or whatver their called now of stealing the paths from Frank Herberts Dune.

The original alpha centauri was awesome, the New one Beyond Earth is so simplified it lacks all the immersive uniqueness that separeted the factions in the original. In the New Beyond Earth game I can't tell any difference from the factions based on their actions whereas in the original you had huge difference.

Example:

University: Focus on Technology, huge penalties for raising armies so they tip the Balance With having better weapons or just nuking you.
The Lords Believers: Big penalty to Technology and habitability but makes up for it by breeding like Rabbits and raising huge hosts of armies.
Human Hive: Collectivist, penalty to economy but great industry. Very aggressive military and mediocre Tech. Acts basically like the USSR, if you don't submit he will attack you.
Spartan Federation: Isolationist and elite armies, want to be left alone With their guns and freedom.
Environmentalists: Great habitability and Food but weak armies (hippies after all), but can become Dangerous when they learn how to use the enviornment to cleanse you.

Would be cool if the Stellaris devs could look to original Alpha Centauri for more flavor and much deeper Depth that will allow for better gameplay With emergent conflicts isntead of the boring as ***** Civ5 fireaxis *****. Hopefully 7 paths instead of just 3 will mean this.

My absolute favourite reading of Civilizations: Beyond Earth was that it represents a surprisingly fatalistic view of humanity making all the exact same mistakes we made on Earth on an alien world- all the while crowing at how much more advanced we are and how clearly this time is different.

Also similar:
Galactic Civilisations 3 allignment Sytem (however a lot less tree-ish).
Every RPG Talent Tree ever, including later Total Wars and Star Wolves series games.
Every tech tree ever. Including the semi-hidden one in Stellaris.

Realy that is about as novel a concept as Regenerating health. Wich actually predates Call of Duty with a old game where you play a Smily Face.
Or destructible Environemt. Wich was in Space Invaders first.
Only so many game concepts to go around.

If I had to translate the BE Affinities to Stellaris I would say:
Purity: Xenophobe
Supremacy: Materialist
Harmoy: Xenophile

My absolute favourite reading of Civilizations: Beyond Earth was that it represents a surprisingly fatalistic view of humanity making all the exact same mistakes we made on Earth on an alien world- all the while crowing at how much more advanced we are and how clearly this time is different.
Humantiy does avoid pollution this time. The Cities are small communities, that are highly effective. The meta is designed around more flat then "per pop" modifiers. It is a subtle difference, but a noticeable one once you look a bit.
