Hi everybody,

I'm a new user, and I really hope that you are the forum to help me:

I'm currently 2nd on points playing with Denmark with approx. 100 years remaining. Spain leading the game (with 200 points) has just fallen into civil war, thus my question is the following:

Should I put all my plans on standby and just barge head on into war with Spain, hoping that they will loose as many points as i win?
Is it even neccessary to go to war, or will the civil war cost spain the final victory anyway?
Is it typically easy to overcome a civil war?

Any help will be much appreciated.

hi Porse,

welcome to the forum!

Personally I find these kind of strategic questions the toughest to answer.
If you want to attack S., a civil war will almost always provide a good opportunity. If you win the war and claim land, this will almost certainly drop Spains score. Your score will rise as you gain land and win battles.

Will the civil war cost Spain the victory? Hard to say. I suppose it will depend on the outcome and the cause.

Welcome. :)

What you can do is try to overthrow the Spanish government by taking only the provinces still under its control, and leaving the revolted provinces alone. If you manage to do that, you'll keep every Spanish province you have been able to conquer during the war. This could translate in a huge danish overseas empire. ;)

Even if you don't attack Spain, it is likely that it won't be able to recover from the civil war, as it is already affected by inflation during the latter stages of the game.

if you have a fleet left (likely), attack, attack, attack. this is a rich opportunity. when i go hit spain (for almost all countires) i like to attack their rich, extensive and usually poorly defended colonial empire. a small army can make big gains.

as suggested, forcing the collapse of the spanish government could create a very large danish empire. so how greedy are you?

If you attack, a few small cavalry forces can wrake havoc in Spains Latin colonies.

Note that Spain may have some colonies in the Philipines too.

Yes my plan was only to take control of the provinses not already captured by the rebbels, but what is then the meaning of 'overthrowing' the spanish govn?

Also ofcourse it makes good sense to go berserk in their undefended colonies.

Hmmm...think I will go for it,
I guess also that the spanish army should be somewhat smaller than usually considering their lack of provinses.

I will report the result.:D

the computer does the overthow if the rebels take over enough provinces. all wars end, all rebels go away, independent countries show up, and sometimes there is a relegion change. its quite spectacular really.

you may have to wait a bit, so do not make peace unless you absolutely have to

Try to keep clear of rebels too, because you'll have to fight them. No escaping it.;)

One of the best things to have happen during a war that you are losing is if you have a big revolter province that is under siege, a revolt happens that is like 35K-50K that wipes out the opposing army and is reduced to something managable like 10K or less.

yuck. this just happened to me. playing hungary, army decimated, turks everywhere, rebels show up, govt falls, transylvania, serbia and wallachia pop up as new buffer states, lose four provinces to turks, hafsids, algiers. hungary loses half of its territory and still mid 15th C....

QUITE spectacular.
