In this city I have divided commercial, industry and residential into their own separate areas. This causes major traffic challenges, which is a lot of fun :) Especially people from the residential area wanting to get the commercial area to shop and work, presents a big challenge. I have created a large and complex public transport system to solve this.

The public transport system I have created works in 3 steps. Buses first pick people up and brings them the one of these bus terminals and train stations. Some are obviously bigger than others :)

Then they take to train all the way to this central station which is situated in the commercial area. Usually the station will say that 3000-4000 passengers have been serviced.

After they have arrived with the train, nearby metro stations will take them the rest of the way.

With this city it is very clear that a good traffic system has a large effect on the income. When my system at times has been inadequate, commercial has consistently complained about too few customers and industry about not enough buyers of product. Demand for all three zones as well as population increases also seem to fluctuate with the traffic situation.

The highway system also needs to be very extensive for the city to work ;)

ah, the classic hub and spoke model; a mainstray of the airline industry, and a pretty good public transit model. Those highways though... are relatively insane...

I don't use rail at all... it doesn't seem like a viable choice over metro, beyond a thematic choice... the opportunity cost is too large (large stations) compared to metros (compact stations) There needs to be more incentive to use rail over metro

Yes it is true that metros seems to be far superior to train stations on all stats, which is odd. Metros should be considerable more expensive than train station given their advantage of being underground.

Agreed. At a minimum metro and rail should flip in terms of unlock order and their costs.
