With a new patch and seeing all the custom buildings showing up on the workshop, I thought it was a good time to take a break from Washington, DC and start on New York, NY.
Also trying Traffic++ (as Cope’s Despawn Mod gave me an error) and Precision Engineering for the first time.
I’m using Chehaut’s New York map, which includes the bulk of the lower portion of Manhattan island as well as parts of New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Queens.
First step isn’t so much for fidelity, but getting a basic city up and running. Though I do try to align the grid north of 14th Street(ish) to the actual deviation of the grid from true north.
Measuring the angle of deviation from true north.
That looks like the grid will align with the island, yes? Hopefully. We’ll see when we get further north…
And while I am still focusing on building out a sustainable city as opposed to matching New York exactly for now, I built the West Side Highway and connected it to the regional highway with a diverging diamond interchange(ish) to cope with the traffic. This is the first time I have tried that interchange and I made the right/left crossover multilevel so opposing traffic doesn’t actually intersect. The West Side Highway also terminates with where I estimate 14th Street to be, the latter of which I built with bus lanes. I also didn't destroy the original highway, so as you can see this is really overkill in terms of capacity (for now).
A pleasant surprise was the piers seemed like the perfect place to build windmills. But this is all temporary. Since my parallel world New York is actually going to be using the 1609 survey map. Once we have the money flowing, we will work on getting the fidelity, which will involve much bulldozing, I anticipate.
A starter New Amsterdam, to get the money flowing first…
