To add more depth into gameplay, After Dark has some of the old city services expanded and tweaked. Mostly these modifications were based on user feedback and on things that we noticed the users were doing but were not handled as elegantly as possible by the game.

Police
Crime logic has been completely redesigned. We noticed at some point that crime rate always stayed very low and it was almost impossible to get it to rise. This was caused by crime sate being linked with citizen happiness. Basically before many citizens were unhappy enough to turn to crime, they moved out of the city or got sick due to low health resulting from the conditions causing the low happiness. This did not seem like a fun feature, as crime did not really create any meaningful choices for players, it just meant placing a few police stations. With the new crime logic it is possible for the crime rate to rise easier and fluctuate more. There are actual crimes happening, which police have to respond to, and capture the criminal. This is where the biggest new change comes in: the criminals need to be transported to Prisons to serve their sentence.

A whole new addition are the Prisons. Police cars can hold a few criminals, but have to return to police stations and HQ's when they become full. Criminals are unloaded into holding cells in the police buildings. As the police in Skylines is never wrong or corrupted, the Prisons send out vans to carry the criminals to immediately start serving their sentences. How handy is that? Sentences are 15 game weeks long, with some getting out a bit earlier due to good conduct, and others staying a little bit longer. If a prison is demolished, the prisoners are released early and might not behave well.

Public transport
Public transport has gotten new buildings with new combinations of functions. Players with many bus lines might have noticed that sometimes allowing citizens to change lines can be tricky when there are many lines stopping close to each other. The stops should be close to have only a short way for the passengers to walk, but far enough so buses can move unhindered and traffic doesn't get blocked by the buses. The solution for this is the brand new Bus Station! The stations has many platforms for buses to stop at. Passengers can change lines inside the buildings so they don't have to cross any streets and won't affect traffic. Simple and easy, and lessens the effect bus line changing areas have on the traffic, allowing for a better flow.

Cargo hub
For cargo, there's a cargo hub. Previously players who wanted to export large quantities of goods often used trains to carry the goods to harbors and let ships take the goods away. This resulted in the roads between the cargo train stations and harbors being VERY busy. The cargo hubs allows trains to arrive straight to the harbor to unload, so there's no need to have the constant truck traffic between the station and the harbor.

Taxi cabs
What is something that all big cities have but Skylines was missing? Taxi cabs! The taxi service is an new service that allows tourists and citizens to order taxis to take them to their destination. Basically taxis work a lot like private cars, but with difference of taxis residing in a depot and using stands to wait for new customers. Taxis especially help tourists to get around the city easier and thus make them stay longer in the city, generating more tax income.

International airport
Last but definitely not the least is the international airport. Fans asked for a larger airport, so here it finally is! Not only is it the largest building in the whole game, it also has a hidden surprise: an integrated metro station. No more long lines of cars or crowds walking to public transportation stops next to the airport, you can offer your citizens an easy way to arrive and depart the airport by connecting the built-in metro station to a metro network.

We spent a long time pondering on what buildings would provide the most enjoyment for players and offers easier, nicer ways of doing things that players were already doing. We hope you like what we came up with!

What a wonderful world...

We need a mod for police corruption, then :D

So the (rather ugly) unique building The City Court House doesn't play a role? One cannot put cims in jails without a trial(!) It's against cimanity.

Looking forward to the new expansion!

Hopefully some new unique buildings!

Hopefully those too, and hopefully the long waited elevated railway station (or possibility to make a custom one by the modders) This is much needed.

All sounds great. It would be good if tourism could have a deeper simulation at some point in the future- a zoo, waterpark, para gliding, water skiing cims, jet ski, horse racetrack, ski resort, funicular/ski lift, etc. Cities Skylines is fast establishing itself as an alltime classic city builder/simulator. Thanks guys

Nobody uses the airport and tourism doesn't work nor function - if anything very poorly. Hopefully tourism is fixed in the upcoming version.

And yes we rreally need that elevated rail station, the system isn't complete without it.
One elevated station would make, at least much of ~ empty all the "we want ground metro".
With just one station added to the game the rail system would perfect itself. Of course not counting TRAM DLC or similar.

It would be very sexy to have subways with multiple platforms or railways with multiple platforms!

Edit: Looking forward to the pedestrian footbridges and cycle lanes. They are so important in the current game, it will be nice to have better ones in the game.

How exactly do the taxi cabs work? Do you just put a depot down and they do the rest, or do you need to plot routes and such?

In Skylines, in a big city with good public transport, like rail, subway and buses - the usage is very low.

Hopefully taxi service isn't away from public transport usage.

Perhaps taxis are more tourist orientated...?

Hm yeah, I must think Back to the future II movie, no lawyers. Faster lol

But this After Dark looks great more & more! What's next? :D
You devs are doing a great job! Great, you are!

I translated this here en Français.

There's this PAX video with lot's of gameplay footage of After Dark.

I'm sorry to say that the bike paths are a really cheap fork of the ped paths, really cheap.

I saw the new roads with bus lanes on that video - similar roads should exist but instead of bus lanes - with bike lanes.

What we seen so far about bike paths are really disappointing.

In real life people can take they're bike to all kinds of roads (minus highway).

Cims should be able to do the same, bike along at least some of the main roads.

Ped paths turned into bike paths by updating walking cim animations to biking cim animations and adding a little speed to these cover-up pedestrians would be really disappointing.

Can pedestrians and bikers even share the same path? Huh..

C'mon bike lanes along roads is a neat DLC/expansion - I don't want to be too critical - but what we've seen ~ bike paths are a no go = a no seller.

Pardon my confusion :) From another video I saw exactly what I was looking for - bike lanes alongside roads. This picture proves it.

Hopefully though bike lanes are available on variety of road sizes, please.

What happens when the bike lane ends? As in above picture..

Will biking cims able to continue biking for example on that traditional six lane road with decorations?

Btw, as I side note: I really do dislike all the parked cars on 4-lane roads/avenues - that space could be taken to much better use.

It is also in the previous video you posted on a 4 lane road, at approximately 15:07

Thanks adys123 I had totally missed it :D

Only one thing remains: can't we have trees and bike lanes on roads? :/

I really like the sound proofing effects. If trees cannot be fitted maybe grass (decoration) don't those sound proof in the vanilla along with trees.. hmmm.

I'm missing trams, ferries and more variations of streets (like in CiM2). I hope for more improvements for harbours with piers, without user-content a harbour-city looks like ugly.
Please have a look to make more efficient traffic management in the next patch.

This expansion looks nice! The night lights in the pictures also look better than before. I am holding myself back for the moment on playing this game, will surely restart once After Dark comes out.

What I still would like to see:
  • Trams. This is a big one.
  • Elevated rails
  • I am not sure what these are called but Developed water banks. No city today (ok, a bit of an exaggeration) would have a harbor with natural banks.

What are the planned bug fixes in the patch that will accompany the DLC and that will bring the night/day cycle? Probably the tourists bug fix, but what else?

The game has elevated railway built into the the rail feature. But what's missing - and is long overdue - is an elevated rail station :/

From reddit I read that what they've done to tourism is rather a fix than an update - but it's confirmed. Hopefully tourists will now come in plenty and actually use money and transportation too.

A question regarding the taxi service - is it more towards tourists than citizens?
Can tourist enter and exit a taxi only from the taxi stops?

I see the taxi feature quickly eating all the passengers from buses, train and subway - as it is that public transport usage is very low in Skylines (every cim even non-adults have driving licenses and on a path to work / shopping etc the only factor counting is a one that favors 99% cars.

Could After Dark tweak the code to favor into some extent public transport use when mass transit available?

The city/district policy "free public transport" is only cosmetic, eye-candy, filler in the policies panel, this has been discovered in tests.

Further to the comments about an elevated rail station - a sunken station would also be good.. any station where the tracks don't have to rollercoast up or down to meet the platforms.. so either elevated or sunken stations would work for me. That's probably #1 on my wish list right now - I check the workshop often hoping a modder has created one

Only Colossal Order is able to create an elevated rail station :/ ANd it's huge downside that they didn't add it to the base game from the get go. The rail system is broken with elevated station (12m).

Modders might be able to do some kind of elevated station if in the upcoming update CO change modding api and asset editor to more funky.

Could office worker amount be upped a tiny portion? Perhaps same with commercial. Level 3 office: only 20 workers, even 30 would be better. Maybe rebalance all work sectors just a tiny bit - for realism.

On the other hand residential buildings seems to have just the right amount of households per building

Oops, that's what I meant!
