First off, I just want to say that I KNOW that Cities Skylines 2 isn't announced, but this is just rather an idea.

With that out of the way....

We all know that there are many map makers (like me) that loves to create maps and publish them. There is a built-in heightmap feature that works really well, but I think we can expand on this some.

Upon the New Map creation screen there should be a number of options and features that allows the user to create random terrain generation. Options and intensity settings for things such as:
-mountains
-lakes
-rivers
-sea level
-land type (island, plain, mountains, coastal, etc.)

I believe with these presets, the user can then go further to customize the map to their liking with terrain/water tools like we already have. The heightmap feature is also another good option that should still be implemented if the user wishes to utilize that instead. With presets, or 'map seeds', it allows them to create really nice terrain without having to spend endless hours creating mountains from scratch. Oh and with those features should be either a terrain brush, or on the generation screen, an erode tool/option. This will quickly allow them to have nicely sculpted terrain features.

I think that's about it so far...
Any other ideas?

Constructive feedback only please.

Map generation in Transport Fever 2 sounds very promising. I hope the devs at CO take a look and get inspired.

Caves are not possible when you use a system where every position on the map can only have one height (2D). You have to model them as an asset.
Maybe CO is able to implement such functionality in CS2, so we could have caves, overhanging cliffs, stone arches etc., but i doubt it.

If i can remember it right then there are some form of cave's in the park life DLC.

There are some caves in Parklife, but I don't think they are quite what @Fleetzpiepe was hoping for.

If the user wishes to carve out caves and overhangs, then the terrain manipulation needs to resemble that of Planet Coaster from the company Frontier.

More or less. That's why I'd only suggest it for a sequel game, it'd be too overly complicated a reworking for Paradox, or anyone else for that matter, to truly implement to the original.
