Here's a PM I received from someone who is, as of yet, unable to post on this forum.

Hey there,

Reading your AAR in the forum made me want to comment and ask questions so badly that i registered and then got the message to hold out five more days before spam-protection was disabled -.-

First of all: Yeah, Hofburg (means castle with yard btw :)) seems to be located correctly in refrence to the odd angled map :).

Second: Thx for the great AAR and testing for all of us

I noticed that in all your screenshots the vehicles were green. Is that defined by the company colors?
Are there any reallife companys (like Wiener Linen, Dr.Richard, Post or [url=www.oebb.at]ÖBB) with their corresponding company colors to choose from?

Would you think the game weighs more on realism or quantity of possibilities? If it was the former it would not be possible to build U-Bahn (metro) before 1970.

Anyways you really made me wanna buy the game, thxal :)

Regards
Noddster

Hello Noddster,

To answer your questions.
You can define the company color, logo and name yourself. So if you want a historical name, that's most certainly possible.
The game is a good balance between realism and playability. At the moment there aren't a ton of options but I have the idea the developers try to work these out as good as they can (early beta, two beta-testing cycles). This beta really gives me the feel this game will be great once finished and even better when the expansions come out.

Cheers,

SM

The return of the arrogant Italian

The situation at the station, bad as it still might be, is getting a little better. 77 unhappy customers is an improvement over 120.
Check out the add on the wall in the picture below. The tram is a brand new one and thus has not made any profit yet.

Oh, the horror, that arrogant Italian, what was his name? Giovanni?, well, doesn't matter, he has returned with another quest. Not content with the line I build to the theater he now wants one to his gallery. OK, no problem. This gallery of his is close to the Hofburg line and thus a slight alteration will net me the cash-reward, easy-peasy.

As you can see in the last picture above my solutions have worked and the streets have quieted down. The number of waiting passengers has lowered and best of all, the aren't mad at me anymore, just a little impatient.
My work isn't done of course, but I want to take a look at how everything develops with the five lines I now have. Wait for a while and collect the profits. With this profit I will start building on the most interesting method of transport: the underground.

And just a nice picture to close this chapter

Very informative, thanks for this AAR.

And it does not hurt that Vienna is included which seldom happens in any games.:)

Going Underground

By early April 1931 my budget was of yet wholly insufficient to build an entire underground line but I was determined to give it a start and try to get the first part of the line finished before the end of the year. Thus I set out to find the route of this first line. Connecting the three bottleneck areas with one another would of course be the best plan. The first station on the line would be at the railway station, the second on or near the Auwinkel-square and the third and final station of this first part of the line should be at the department store and cathedral on the, by now famous, Rottenturmstrasse (I don't think I will forget the name of that street ever. And if I visit Vienna sometime in the future....).

The general area of stop one

Stop two

2wp2uzo.jpg

And stop three

Now the next question as hand was to build either an underground metro, a surface level metro or an above ground metro. Surface level is out of the question of course and above ground is, if you ask me inappropriate for an old city's center. Thus the third option, underground, was what I would chose. Incidentally this was by far the most expensive of the three.

358q593.jpg

Then to place the first station. These underground stations are really, really big and placing them is not easy. Fortunately they have a wide area for attracting passengers but still, the number of spots I could build one near the station was limited to three. At a park a little distance from the station, in the parking lot or, pointed in the wrong direction, directly opposite the stations entrance. As a passenger I wouldn't mind a ride which costs me a few extra seconds if I that means I have to be able to get to the station quickly. The later it would thus be. And with a cost of 3,193.50 (the cost of an entire tram-line) I was now broke.......

Here's our first station, can't wait to have it up and running with people using the underground. But before that is possible I will have to build three more stations and connect them. The first task will be to raise the money to do so, alternatively I can go for another loan....but will that be a smart thing to do?
The bit of smoke you see is a train leaving the station.

I asked this question in the facebook, but the question has not received an answer...
The inscription to the number of passengers on the vehicle is very good. But why on vehicles there are no numbers of lines?
There is example from TG:

there is line colour if you spot line 1 and 3 have different colors but devs can add that if they want its simple to tell which line bus is running

A number in front of the stop telling which line(s) will stop there would be a nice addition. I didn't really run into any trouble but then I don't have that many lines yet.
Here's a nice pic of a fire.

Hey!

Thanks for this amazing work you're doing on the AAR.

I'm living in Vienna (to be exact a bit in south of Vienna) and it's interesting to see how they've placed the buildings.
A few things I want to mention:

-There where you've showed as the airport, there is actually non. There was a quite little one in the 20s but it wasn't really in use for international flights. Vienna International Airport is in Schwechat, a 15.000 inhabitants suburb town in the southeast
-I can't understand why Vienna is displayed so small in the 30s. In the time before 1914 it was even bigger than it is now. Also when I don't know the exact number of citizens in the 30s, I can't imagine that it was so small.
-The railway station in the east doesn't exists too. There is a double station (two terminus' coupled to so called Southstation+Southstation Eastrail) in the south of the city centre near "Schloss Belvedere" (does Belvedere exists in CiM?), but surely non where you showed one in a screen
-I'm a bit disappointed about the missing southern suburbs in the map of 2000. The southern area is the one with the highest population density in Vienna. In the small lower austrian districts "Mödling" and "Baden" are living about 250.000 people. That's the reason for daily mega jams on South-East-Tangent (that's the name of the highway you mentioned once)

A suggested solution

Still very interested in improving the situation on the Rottenturmstrasse I received the following PM from Jasu which pointed me at an option I hadn't noted yet.

jasu said:
hey mosby,
first of all thanks for the great work, it has been really interesting.
have a question and couldn't wait 5 days either,
i saw the difficulty with the traffic, the bus and tram lines on central street, and you chose to alter the routes quite a bit, but i was wondering if you could try laying tram tracks through market plazas or parks, would that work? The developer diary #2 shows that is possible, just wanted to see that in action, and see how much freedom is there. after all if tram goes through a plaza - there would be no traffic delays and no traffic jams for the tram

30ttcpe.jpg

First thing I did after reading the pm was trying out what Jasu said. And he was right, tram-lines can be build over plazas, pavements etc. The natural thing to do then was finding places where to make bring this new-found knowledge to good use.
Unfortunately, due to the lay of the stops there aren't all that many places on the current line where I can make this to good use without creating an entire different line. As my solutions to the traffic-problems had paid of and the situation was getting a little better every day I first decided to leave the stop on Rottenturmstrasse as it was and made some slight alterations to the line which might help with the flow of traffic as no side-street was blocked by a waiting tram.

1zxpeu9.jpg

2mh96ps.jpg

Helpful as that might have been the Station to Center bus-line was getting more and more crowded every day and thus it needed more buses than the six it currently had. I expanded to seven and then eight in the hopes this would take care of the unhappy passengers walking away from the stops. Of course all problems should be gone once the underground line was in place.....but that would take a little while.

The extra buses almost forced me to do alter the entire Northern tram-line and get it off the busy road. Thus I broke up the track on the Rottenturmstrasse and removed the stop there after all, building a new part of the line north of the department store and in so doing keep the line away from the crowded part of the city. A couple of new stops and the line was rebuild.....and my budget completely gone.

At that moment I experienced my first CTD and had to redo the work on the line. The eventual line turned out a little different as it uses the pavement just to the north of the Department Store.
