Cars who enter roundabouts do not yield to cars who are already in the roundabout

IRL, cars waiting to enter the roundabout always yield to cars already in the roundabout.

Watching quill's stream right now, he is struggling with the merging logic that cars are using to enter and handle roundabouts. Cars who are already in the roundabout are stopping and letting cars who are waiting to enter to actually drive through, thus cluster****ing traffic up.

I think if the merging would be fixed traffic would be much smoother watching some of these streams. Maybe put in a rule in the code that mergers wanting to enter must wait for an opening?

Yes quill is doing a good job right now showing off some things that definitely need to be addressed though I doubt there is any time to do so prior to release, not just the roundabouts but the whole leftlane\merge issue. Hard to understand how those two issues didn't show up during internal game playing, then again we don't really know how dated the builds these lucky few are currently playing but I imagine they're not 'that' old.

Because at the moment roundabouts are simply a circle of one way roads. The AI treats them exactly the same as any other road junction. What we really need is a tool to add or remove traffic lights and set junction priorities.

Maybe some sort of tool that allows you to click on an intersection and select which lane(s) are the yielding lanes.

Also quill is demonstrating pretty well why more options for highway mergers and on/off ramp mergers need to be implemented. The highways look pretty good, but some of the mergings look ugly and pretty nonfunctional.

Are those still older builds and not the release code? Maybe some of that stuff is being tweaked right now? But yeah, it's currently not perfect but dang I'm still excited as heck.

If you look closely, there are no traffic lights on a roundabout with one way roads. But it's still rather odd that on roundabout they give way to in-going lane and that's the problem I see.

None of this is good news, and reminds me too much of SimCity. The traffic patterns in that game were awful, but the traffic did work as intended in terms of how streets operated. Traffic was one thing I had hoped wouldn't be so much of an issue with this game so that is concerning. Hopefully a dev can clear this up as to if any of this is fixed in the final version.

It depends which road types you use. Highways and smaller roads don't generate lights, but the larger roads do. Besides, some busy roundabouts have traffic lights IRL.

Not only traffic lights.

In this special case stop signs or better 'give way' signs would be preferred.

That's what I meant by setting junction priorities. Traffic on the roundabout could be set as the main route, with all joining roads being minor routes with give way signs. That would be a useful feature for all roads, not just roundabouts.

I've also seen some situations where upgrading to a higher capacity road actually made traffic worse at some intersections because the game generated traffic lights at every single intersection. The minor side roads would have been better left with give way signs.

Thinking about it, it would be nice to be able to set speed limits too. Most major roads where I live are still only single lane roads but with a higher speed limit.

Were these roundabouts made by Quill? Maybe the built in ones have better traffic control?

I know this will be a nightmare to manage all this traffic. It took forever for Maxis to get there system working, and it still wasn't very good. I remember one thing was no left turns except intersections. lol I see a mod that removes that now. lol With the one-way road mods I guess traffic is better, but still a nightmare. I'm sure this will be harder. Simcity's sims didn't have homes and would just go to the nearest destination. can't imagine the extra traffic of sims owning a home and a steady work place.lol

There aren't any roundabouts in this game. Those pre-built big circle roads just do not function the way a roundabout should, so you should not use them as a roundabout.

This comes pretty close to a roundabout, and it merges pretty well compared to the bigger pre-built lots. Does anyone know of footage that shows it in action? I'm not sure if it'd be deadlocked or not by heavy traffic. It could be, as entering cars will not give right of way.
