Chapter Six
A fierce sense of competition began to show in the actions of the French and English colonial developments at this point in history (circa 1626.) Over time competition would evolve into hostile threats and foreboding actions. Until that point the two powers would fight a silent war to claim the riches of North America. It became dreadfully apparent to those in charge of colonial development that a strong border between French Canada and the English coast region must be established. With this is mind a series of English trading posts were established along side French owned land. This was mainly in the great lakes region of America.
Further development took place along the Atlantic coast. The fortress in Chesapeake was expanded yet again and the population of Roanoke drastically and suddenly climbed. Once the Roanoke area was populated it began to stand out as a brilliant trading area. Its position on the coast meant good harbors and accessible trade routes. The primary good of export from Roanoke, tobacco was also in tremendous demand. All of these factors led to the Roanoke province becoming a full fledged center of colonial trade in early 1627.
In 1627 a census of the colonial levy was taken, and funds gathered for major improvements. With the vast North American colonies growing in size rapidly the improvements came at a high, but well spent cost. The original infantry force was expanded from three thousand standing to 10 thousand standing. A group of five canons was even mustered for the unit’s artillery battery. Calvary was ignored and passed by with the excuse of uselessness. Naval forces in the area were even so fortunate as to see expansion. This came in the form of two new warships the Endeavor and Tudor. With such coin spent on defense the crown felt that their assets were well protected from the greedy eyes of foreign men.
With 1627 drawing to a close fantastic plans for expansion were in the works. Funds were found, and a great number of able bodied men discovered to start colonization of the Deep South. Men to be sent on this expedition were to say not the most just in the empire. In all truth these men were rounded up in the London jails and given sailing orders. Criminals, but all the same settlers.
History passes like a river it flows on and on never stopping. Thus, there will always be more to tell of the world and its happenings in the years past.
