If I had to guess opt-in pre-release betas are problematic due to DLC concerns. It'd be worse to sell DLC for a beta product, and the way they have the game structured they wouldn't be able to allow for DLC content in the beta unless people pay for it. Hence doing beta patches after instead of before.

But really, this update seems to be pretty well received. I'm not at all seeing the massive backlash and I've been fairly active over the forums so far.

If you're going to complain about moderation policies, blatantly lying about the TOS isn't the way.

Edit: this has nothing to do with Xeorm; looks like the post I replied to is gone.

I’m not upset, i’m use to it and know its part of the paradox launch cycle. They did a good job and did good work before the start of their holidays and i trust them to do good work after the holidays.

But seriously this whole release it before christmas thing is senseless and probably doesn’t make enough of an impacton sales to be worth it. Who’s buying dlc on steam for christmas as gifts? How many people buy the dlc because of the christmas season that wouldn’thave bought it anyways?

If we just moved past this senseless tradition of releasing things before christmas we could put holidays in the middle of development cycles where they belong.

The same trouble happens in summer sometimes too!

You have a calendar and several months to plan. Put patch and work interrupting breaks in the dead zone of your calendar between updates and you’ll instantly get rid of the endless complaints of pausing patches for the holidays.

A 6month dev cycle can look like this: Start dlc april or may -> take summer break and have nobody notice -> release in fall -> patch up dlc -> start new dlc in october or november -> take christmas break when nobody cares -> release in feb or march -> patch -> start again.

Working around two big holidays a year can’t be this hard can it?

Having said that i’m sure some head honcho can come in here and spout a million good reasons i’ve never thought of as a layman as to why you want to time dlc release right before breaks. I’ll be glad to hear them.

An issue is that there aren't "two large breaks" in a year.

There are at least three (as Easter is a thing, and movable).

Another is that companies traditionally target Christmas as a release date because people tend to buy games at that point - either as gifts, or with money they've received as a gift.
"New for Christmas this year..." is a common tagline on releases.

I'm not upset or angry.

Well, Paradox simply reworked the entire core of the game in a single patch. At first, when Wiz showed the new pop system prototype, I didn't think they were able to make such a change without launching Stellaris 2, because my guess was that this was going to break the game and the community, beyond repair. But the game while buggy is not broken, and the community received the patch way better than the FTL removal.

However, I'll wait a few bugfixing patches before play Le Guin. No drama needed. While is frustating to not play the game in this new state, I understand the difficulties to change a entire core concept (for the better) in one patch. I'll not pick up torches and pitchforks for that.

And I'll pre-order the next DLC without doubt, as always, because in the actual state of the industry, a game with such depth and content as Stellaris we don't see often, and I need

Hey @Dnote Can you tell us if there’s better sales for DLC and the base game during the christmas season releases vs non holiday season dlc releases?

Thanks!

Just to answer the question asked of me... doesn't matter when a DLC launches in the year, performance of it is dictated by how many people are playing and how interesting the content of it is. Though generally it is best to avoid mid-summer (because apparently people go outside then), and early January (because everyone is broke). Megacorp launched when it did, because that is when the development schedule said it would.
