Developers of the world, rise up and fire your executives. Their mindless targeting of the Christmas sales season ruined your update, which would have been awesome if it had occurred in March or had an open month-long prerelease beta. Instead, you get this headache that is probably cutting into your holidays. Look at how angry the customers are, and we aren't even the ones who have to stay late to fix it. Seriously, this is serious, y'all need to seize the means. A dev team with any capacity for self-determination would never do this to themselves.

Personally I don't feel very angry.
I'm marginally angry that we get an open beta now, post release. Like, they push the broken version to everyone and then make sure to lock the fixes behind an opt-in beta? Seems like the worst of both worlds to me. I hope this incident will educate the executives about the utility of an open beta and the importance of listening to your developers, but I'd bet the devs just get penalized for the sour reviews. I hope Wiz hasn't been reassigned to a secret toilet scrubbing project, it's a promising update, it's just undercooked, and we can safely assume it wasn't the developers pushing for a December 6th release.

I'm confused?
The update has it's share of serious problems, but overall it seems to me this is one of the most stable and well-received updates Stellaris has ever received. Possibly one of the best for any Paradox game. And the actual amount of complaining about actual bugs and balance issues (not the gameplay changes) is quite low for such an update IMO.

Most things in 2.2 are fine-ish. Things like the multi-species population growth mechanics have me running for the xenophobe hills, though...

Yeah that's easily the worst issue in 2.2 for me. First time a major issue has actually been close to literally game-breaking, making me want to stop playing altogether. But I'm still having plenty of fun playing xenophobe and gestalt empires until they fix it.

Sorry, but I enjoy 2.2.? so far, its not that bad as it seems (the angry/disappointed people always make more apperance in the forum than the ones whos enjoy it). You can play any pre-2.2 version if you want until March, PDX team made it possible for everyone. With this Christmas release they made it possible for people to play it in their holidays, and let modders / bughunters do their things earlier than March.

Its playable. A buggy, unbalanced version, but its fun for most! If you dont have the fun, you can always go back to the version you liked.

There's a mod that basically fixes the problem for now.

I think this is a knock-on effect from the severity of the upset. People who aren't bothered don't really take full notice of the complaints but I have never seen threads deleted as often as I am seeing them deleted in this forum since this release. The mods are working overtime, people are like actually losing their minds up in here, in a scary way. I'm not that emotionally invested in the game, but it's pretty clear to me that the first release was objectively broken. I didn't mind playing it because I was just exploring the changes to the system, but it's broken. I haven't dug into 2.2.2 yet, but the fact that the devs were even working on December 20th to release it shows that these were no ordinary problems.

Roll back to 2.1.3 (or .4) until you're happy with the state of 2.2. It's exactly the same as if they'd delayed the release until later. I'm quite happy to be playing 2.2.x now, even though their are a few things I'd like to see adjusted,

If I cared that much I certainly would rollback, but I'd actually be happily playing the prerelease beta if there'd been one. I'm just seeing a lot of folks who didn't want to dive into bugland and really shouldn't have been forced to. And like, when I talk to people about Stellaris I have to be like "Hey don't get into it this month", which probably isn't great for PDX's holiday sales, but what can I do, trick my friends into buying a broken game whose official documentation is a wiki that is mostly 3 versions out of date?

Were you around for the pre-2.0 dev diary regarding the FTL change? This is weaksauce compared to the amount of $#it people collectively lost over that, with vows to never play it, never come back to the forums, etc.

I admit I was not into Stellaris at the FTL update, but yeah, I do see the remains of the controversy in the stickies... still. Ugh.

This.

The one thing I would ask Paradox to change about their developement cycles, is to either clearly lable unstable releases as such, or to make them opt-in instead.

Everything else can stay the same. People can buy the DLC once the opt-in starts (clearly express on the store page that the DLC will only become playable without opt-in on the stable release), and either do that and play the full (unstable) opt-in version, or simply delay getting the DLC until after playing 2.2 without Megacorp (the expansion).

It cannot be a worse outcome than what they already did on 6th. (Which is still a good outcome in my book, because I love 2.2 despite the bugs. But I can see why a lot of people get annoyed and would love the next expansion to be a great release instead.)
