Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD. ;)

In other words: From a mathematical point of view that's a really great thing. But from a "common sense" point of view it isn't. When you look at a (geographical) map - especially on a strategic map in a war game - then you want to know at a glimpse which areas belong to you and which belong to your enemy. If you know that France is "blue" (as in most PDS games at least) and you see some random blue spot in Africa then you know that this random blue spot belongs to France. If you limit yourself to a four color map then "blue" is meaningless.

What's more, borders in HoI change. With those colors, Germany and Italy would have the same color and would touch each other since Anschluss, breaking the color distinction.

There appears to be many different colours for lakes in HoI4.

Some of the variety may be due to bleedover from the border lines.

One consideration is to have a consistent color for each terrain feature, so that the customers' eyes become trained and accustomed to interpreting that one colour for that one type of terrain.

Granted, there are more important issues than debating if lakes should be represented by a single colour or multiple colours.

Different map views might demand that different shades or colours be used in order to be consistent with the overall theme of the map view.

It may be that a variety of lake colours is the best method for conveying information to the customer.

But there are quite a few colours used to represent lakes.

Lake colours resulted in unit losses.

In one multiplayer game, one of our players had his units cut-off because he could not appreciate the lake as it appeared on the map:
(Note how the Soviet unit immediately south of Tabriz cannot retreat North towards the USSR because of the "invisible" lake...or rather, "chameleon")

An option to switch colours to a colour blind palette (particularly red green blindness) would be cool.

For those with red-green colour blindness (AFAIK, I don't have it), how does the green-on-greenish aspects of the game (or X-on-Xish for that matter) affect your ability to play the game?

The conversion symbol is green (with yellow highlights) on a field of green (with yellow highlights) -- or at least that is the way it looks to me.

Just wondering if there could be a bit more contrast.
