FEEDBACK

yeah, that is strange. Apparently the AI can overrule their initial NI settings if certain triggers aren't available. You won't see a landlocked nation pick QFTNW even if it says so in common/countries/ and I assume something alike is going on here.
I've often seen Castile and England choose national bank as their first NI, and then moving QFTNW a step down the line.

Could it be that the AI refuses to pick national conscripts (France) if it doesn't use half the support limit at the time of picking the idea?
Bill of rights (Eng) if it has no revolt risk, or nothing above a certain threshold
Divine supremacy (Cas) if it has no muslim provinces.

The last one is certainly possible. I like to take Granada from them in the first few years leaving Castile without muslims provinces (it only takes 3 infantry and 3 cogs). And I was puzzled when I saw QFTNW as their second NI in the common/countries/castile.txt - it's always number three in my colonization games.
I do prefer to think the AI has some coding to select 'appropriate' National Ideas for their situation, even if they can't go outside their 'pool' of ideas. I rarely see the larger powers (i.e. England, Castille, France) stray from the sequence in their country description file, but Portugal often does. I've no idea what caused France to pick Bureaucracy first, but it was my boon. They're kept out of the colonial race even longer thanks ot that. I'm fearing the day they reach Govt 22.

Another good job.

How do you get Ryuku to accept the provinces you are donating to it? I am playing a GC Republican Turkey game (IN 3.2b 2008, deposted the sultan in 1501), and have mostly overrun Europe. I figured I would rescue the poor animists of Ashanti, Oyo and Sokoto from the infidel Castillian & Portugese missionaries, so I made them my vassals and allies.

Then I figured I would export some animists to newly conquered and yet unconverted Christian European territories. My animist vassals refuse any territory I try to donate to them in Europe... What is your secret with Ryuku?
I rarely see better odds than 'very unlikely'. Sheer tenacity does the rest. I tried selling them some Atlantic islands, but then the odds were 'impossible', go figure. I presume it's because they don't have maps to reach them, or somehow feel they're too far away. Mind, I'll be happy enough if they can convert the Asian islands I give them. :)

Other than Oyo, aren't those pagans all landlocked? That would probably be a negative factor for accepting the new provinces.

Maybe they won't accept overseas territories?
That might very well be. Eventually, I'll be testing their 'range'. If push comes to shove, I'll just have to release a pagan state in Europe or North Africa, if I ever get that far. :)

Now you must be wary of those feared Ottoman mercenaries in the employ of the Danish king, the Timariot Guard.
Sadly, the Danes have been little to fear in this game. A Lucky Sweden sorta ruined their chances. :)

Part 28 - The Scottish Counter-Reformation

August 27th, 1510 - Bastar is force-converted to animism.

September 16th, 1510 - Pensacola is converted to hinduism.

December 25th, 1510 - Pegu is converted to hinduism.

EU3_126.jpg
The Timurids are again active in the west.

EU3_127.jpg
A spy mission later, we know they have next to no forces in the east. Emperor Zhengwe I orders an attack.

EU3_128.jpg
January 17th, 1511, Ming forces march westward.

EU3_129.jpg
It is a boon that we get to build up French war exhaustion. They must really want Corsica - and they don't seem to learn.

EU3_130.jpg
Sadly, the Timurids decide to focus entirely on us, abandoning their successful offensive in the west.

April 5th, 1511 - Koch is converted to hinduism.

EU3_132.jpg
The war with Great Britain rages on, without France. A gambit is made; we take the Western Isles, then fall back... and wait...

April 28th, 1511 - Nagpur is force-converted to animism.

EU3_134.jpg
Sadly, they only bring a third of their forces to siege the islands, and though we can easily block them there, we do not have enough forces to overrun the remainder of their army.

EU3_135.jpg
Rather than fight a prolonged fight, only to have France attack them before my truce would expire, we opt to settle things amicably. With all the battle warscore counting towards Great Britain, forcing them to release Scotland is possible.

EU3_136.jpg
The Scots rejoice in their renewed independence. To ensure it lasts, we guarantee them. Great Britain is far from down for good.

EU3_137.jpg
Facing French invasion forces, Corsica surrenders. The Emperor gladly denies France their prize.

May 23rd, 1511 - Archangelsk is converted to hinduism.

August 29th, 1511 - Luango is converted to hinduism.

EU3_141.jpg
The first Timurid army to return from the Goldne Horde lands is repelled.

September 15th, 1511 - Cuttack is converted to hinduism.

EU3_143.jpg
Sieges progress, while the Timurids rally in western Persia. Rebellions are frequent, and devastate some sieges.

December 5th, 1511 - Binh Tri Thien is force-converted to animism.

December 24th, 1511 - Mandla is force-converted to animism.

EU3_146.jpg
Slowly, we push westward.

EU3_147.jpg
Our Scottish friends inform of their intention to fight heresy, denouncing Protestantism and Calvinism.

EU3_148.jpg
There are certainly much heresy for them to fight. Denmark and Sweden are the Protestant forerunners, while Bohemia and some German states have embraced Calvinism. Please note Orthodox Poland... I'm still not sure how that came about, presumably rebels crossing from Lithuania.

EU3_150.jpg
The time has come for peace. The Timurid Empire has been hit hard, but they are rallying. Better to settle things now and hit them again later. Most importantly, we now secure Fars, a coastal Center of Trade. The CoT in Hormuz has disappeared at this point, rendering that province less worthwhile for now.

EU3_151.jpg
A feast is thrown in honor of our victories, and the Oirats are invited. They leave quite content and fed. By morning, they might notice the laxatives our chefs mixed in.

Ming is tasked with recovering Golconda.

Chinese-Horde Exotic Eateries Soothing Efforts (CHEESE): 29

EU3_152.jpg
Formerly a Deccan province, Golconda now resides within Vijayanagar. War now seems inevitable.

November 20th, 1512 - Tumbes is converted to hinduism.

December 19th, 1512 - Chanchan is converted to hinduism.

EU3_155.jpg
A small amount of preparation later, we are ready. January 1st, 1513, the battle for India commences.

EU3_157.jpg
France does not join, simply because they do not know Vijayanagar. Scotland, however, has our maps...

February 26th, 1513 - Qamdo is converted to hinduism.

EU3_160.jpg
While the fighting in India rages on, the Emperor orders a strike on the Incas, to fill our depleted ducat reserves. June 12th, 1513, our forces invade.

going as smoothly as food through a oirat feasting on laxatives !

Anyway wouldn't the western island gambit been effective if you commit as many troops as you have cogs to retreat to, as in a bigger force forcing the brits to commit more troops to defeat them resulting in bigger stack stuck on the islands ? Just wondering though don't really do much of that kinda stuff though i will admit to abusing reloads whenever i get pissed off :p

From my understanding, the AI for some reason normally moves everything it stacked there to siege the island, he never has to let his men fight a battle.

I'm not familiar with this area of the map so I'm probably mistaken, but did you just cut the Timurids in half?
Won't this just force you to fight their entire army next time, or are you trying to "encourage" them to fight the Horde?

The poor Oirats... we're making them utterly bipolar. :)

As for the isles - that might work, but I didn't want to fight them at all, and to retreat I'd need a navy... which would block the enemy coming in. I could time the navy to arrive after the enemy has crossed, but I didn't think that far. I wanted to see how much of their force I could trap, and if I could do so quickly... Had to make peace before France made any gains. :)

i sopose timurids are not a problem anymore:)
I wouldn't go that far... They're no longer in the 'DOOM! on my border' category, but if they attack while I'm busy elsewhere, they'd hurt me. It's actually a good thing they've extended so far west, because they tend to park their forces there, leaving my border unguarded. That allows quick nibbles.

From my understanding, the AI for some reason normally moves everything it stacked there to siege the island, he never has to let his men fight a battle.

The AI usually moves a good portion of their army, and that can help if the army happens to be their doomstack. Since they still have forces, they don't build more either, as long as the stack exists. :)

There is still a thin land corridor just south of the Caspian Sea, and it is an ideal spot to 'snipe' at regiments that pass between their western and eastern half during war.

I think there's a coastal prov there.
There is a province, but I believe it's considered inland, since the Caspian is an inland sea. :)

Part 29 - Robbing Hoods and the Sheriffs of Jiangsu Forest

October 28th, 1513 - Indravati is converted to hinduism.

EU3_162.jpg
Inca fills our drained royal coffers, and with annual deficits running up to losses of five hundred ducats a year, rather than any annual income. This one raid will keep the Ming war effort going for many years.

There will come a time when we can no longer do this sort of thing, simply because we run out of rich, easy targets. By that time, our domestic economy will hopefully have recovered, or Land morale grown enough for us to kill rebels even with the maintenance slider on the 'half' setting.

EU3_163.jpg
Castille makes their way to Mezoamerica. This is our cue to deal with Maya.

EU3_164.jpg
...I've never seen so many talented Sheriffs in my game. Enjoying +17% tax rate, or over three times the Bureaucracy National Idea, is quite a boon. It can't get much better than this.

March 17th, 1514 - Chiang Rai is converted to hinduism.

EU3_166.jpg
Vijayanagar's ally, Korea, is properly mauled. Japan got the last province at the edge of the peninsula in a war long ago.

EU3_167.jpg
From Vijayanagar, Ming takes the cores of Golconda and Surat, and as many extra provinces we can afford.

EU3_168.jpg
Our mission completed, we're awarded yet another conquest mission.

EU3_169.jpg
Alas, Marrakech is now in the hands of Algiers - a very large, powerful and well allied Algiers. If it had been a coastal province, it would have been another thing entirely - but a fight that hard for an inland province is not something Ming is ready for. It will take some time before we can cancel it, however.

EU3_171.jpg
...I was wrong, it can get better. Two six-star and three five-star sheriffs within a decade now, all home-grown. The Ming countryside must be the most peaceful in all the world.

EU3_173.jpg
Poor Sweden is made to suffer for their conversion and multireligious empire.

EU3_174.jpg
At long last, we get to cancel our Marrakesh mission, in favor of more Oirat fun.

EU3_175.jpg
This must be taken advantage of. Reborn Rajputana is Sunni, and thus does not cost us extra stability to fight. On August 2nd, 1514, Emperor Zhengde I declares war.

EU3_176.jpg
Our overall army is considerably larger, but our local forces are relatively even. Their navy is a problem, but as there are hardly any pirates in these waters, there are no patrols for them to attack either.

EU3_177.jpg
A new chef brought in from the Cantonese minority in the south introduces the concept of 'everything can be eaten' to the court. The Emperor, having his doubts, instead opts to send the chef to the Oirats and whip out his specialties. So commanded, so done. The Oirats are placated with many good meals, but relations are expected to drop once they learn the full range of ingredients. Snake meat, dog liver and fish eyes they might accept, but the northerners are probably less accustomed to stir-fried cockroaches.

Chinese-Horde Exotic Eateries Soothing Efforts (CHEESE): 30

The court now advises that we wipe Gakwar off the face of the earth, so that we'll never get this sort of mission again.

March 15th, 1515 - Maithil is converted to hinduism.

April 12th, 1515 - Bihar is converted to hinduism.

EU3_180.jpg
Rajputana is reduced to a single province.

EU3_181.jpg
From France comes word that their multireligious empire has been thrown into chaos. Laughter is heard in the corridors of the imperial palace as his highness drafts a letter of supposed solace to the French monarch.

November 7th, 1515 - Guiyang is force-converted to animism.

EU3_183.jpg
Vijayanagar is trimmed down again. Delhi is so expensive we are better off letting them rebel into a separate country - after all, the extra BadBoy is not much of an issue to Ming...

EU3_184.jpg
Castille's visits in the Gulf of Mexico are disturbing, but as long as they do not have any new, mature colonies, the need to attack them is not that pressing.

EU3_185.jpg
However, a spy from London infiltrating the British administration gives word that they have only three regiments guarding all of Britain. Their remaining forces are on the French border.

EU3_186.jpg
This must be taken advantage of immediately. Excommunicated Gelre is again our ticket, and on February 23rd, 1516, the hostilities commences. Immediately, the British start building new regiments in every province, and the race is on.

EU3_187.jpg
We're baffled to learn Scotland has no interest in taking advantage of Great Britain's vulnerability - but it is just as well. A good portion of the British army is parked in Orkney, and Scottish participation would free them. France, however, is delighted for another whack at Britain.

EU3_188.jpg
Brabant is again alliance leader.

EU3_189.jpg
It has taken some time to prepare, but now we deal with Maya - before Castille finds and jumps them. The date is March 1st, 1516, the goal to strip them of an Atlantic coastline and as much wealth as possible.

Letting Dehli go as an OPM revolter surely depends on province religion, presumably they are Sunni?

FEEDBACK

I wonder if Ming will eventually suffer from colonial revolters...
To this date I have never had trouble with colonial revolters in any of my games. Of course, that could be because I settle the whole place myself, and with the proper culture and religion there is little chance of large and successful revolts happening. :)

Mind, I'm having plenty "fun" with rebels in this game - not just the useful pagans, but all sorts of nationalists. Ugh... Not converting 'quickly' is a pain when conquering fast.

You are still doing great, when do you start the conquest of the special cities for more missionaries?
Thanks.

Since I'm Hindu, the only province that'll give me a bonus is Rome. Mecca and Judea gives nothing to a Hindu. As for Rome... I think I'll leave the Papacy be until I'm powerful enough to take on all Catholic superpowers at once. Europe is fast being carved up as I approach 1570. It's iffy how peaceful France is, compared to Milan, Austria, Poland and Sweden. :)

Letting Dehli go as an OPM revolter surely depends on province religion, presumably they are Sunni?

Does this mean you're Boss Hogg?
Delhi cost 50+ warscore, so I figured I might as well let them revolt and attack them that way. BadBoy isn't much of an issue, and since they should have become Sunni since that is the province religion, there would be no stability issue either. It did revolt, but it threw me a curveball. We'll get to that. :)

I fear I don't catch the 'Boss Hogg' reference. Wiki'ed it, but I've never seen Dukes of Hazard, so I wouldn't know.

hmmm by playing the european powers against each other neither goes strong ^^
but the deficit will worsen :D
Yep, deficit reached an annual loss of 700 ducats, before expenses like merchants, colonists, diplomats, spies, missionaries and new regiments and ships... I really need to build me a land bridge through Europe to avoid the 'distant overseas' thing. I'm already over my naval force limit, but I still don't have enough ships to bring home the full wealth. :)

Pitting the European powers against each other is great fun. I still can't believe France let me play them this much, but I'm sure not complaining. Building an alliance to take down France is a little bit trickier, but they're getting checked in this game. I've reached 1567, and I think the only two provinces north and east of France proper they've taken are Vlaandern and Savoie.

I read Hugo Boss.

Anyway, awesome AAR, a nice insight into EU3 meachnics, and some lessons I intend to use once I can reoslve the Win7/GF8800/Paradox games quagmire (currently all PDox games go balck on startup and freeze my computer due to some graphical issue. Any resolution on that?)
Thanks you. Afraid I can't help you on the technical issue, though.

Part 30 - The End of an Era

EU3_190.jpg
Castille informs us they intend to reclaim lost territory. Galicia recently dishonored an alliance with the Ottomans, who freed them. Ming did not guarantee them, and this is the result. Worse, Galicia is allied to Granada, and only Granada.

EU3_191.jpg
Great Britain was quick to build and consolidate regiments, but they did not have time to raise morale and unit cohesion. As a result, their new army is routed after some chases across the English countryside.

Our war aims versus the Maya are quickly achieved.

July 10th, 1516 - Guangxi is force-converted to animism.

EU3_194.jpg
To deny the French free access, Ming offers the Holy Roman Emperor in Anhalt peace for a token sum of ducats.

January 15th, 1517 - The Azores is converted to hinduism.

EU3_197.jpg
Castille is now undoing our previous hard work...

EU3_198.jpg
With giving Anhalt a peace, we lose the Defender of the Faith title, which in turn enables our last useful religious decision, the Anti-Christian Edict. This does cause some consternation in Paris, but so be it.

Accepting Religious Sects would reduce our missionary gain, and is thus not an option at this point. Only if we ever run out of places to convert shall that be taken.

EU3_199.jpg
British Loyalist rebels are causing us more headache than their army ever did in this war.

EU3_201.jpg
The British colony of Greenland is taken into Ming custody. This will be a tough place to gain colonial access to. We might have to wait for Iceland or Ireland to core, many decades in the future.

EU3_202.jpg
Emperor Zhengde I has had a long and grand reign, but age is taking its toll. The nobility is charged with greater responsibilities - though we are already maxed with Aristocracy, so the total effect is just a stability loss. The alternative of a Decentralization hit is not an option at all.

September 23rd, 1517 - Orissa is converted to hinduism.

November 9th, 1517 - Thang Long is force-converted to animism.

January 2nd, 1518 - Viet Bac is converted to hinduism.

EU3_211.jpg
The Iberians have somehow established a connection with the Maya. There is some concern that they might try to sail around South America, but as long as the pirates of the old Incan coastline remains unharmed, so do the Maya.

April 7th, 1518 - Golconda is force-converted to animism.

EU3_214.jpg
Great Britain is overrun, and harsh terms are offered. Ming has great use of their universities, and we thus take them.

EU3_215.jpg
Their alliance leader Brabant is tasked with offering war reparations.

August 10th, 1518 - Gondwana is converted to hinduism.

November 2nd, 1518 - Catawba is converted to hinduism.

EU3_218.jpg
Ming needs even more money. On December 28th, 1518, we again raid the Incas.

February 16th, 1519 - Ustyug is converted to hinduism.

March 6th, 1519 - The Canarias is converted to hinduism.

EU3_221.jpg
Ka-ching!

April 21st, 1519 - Muskogee is converted to hinduism.

EU3_223.jpg
The Gakwar mission is thrown out in favor of more Oirat gifting. We need the stability they might offer.

EU3_224.jpg
Delhi goes independent as Malwa - and for reasons we cannot quite fathom, they take animism as their state religion. I'm presuming this is because their designated capitol is one of the animist provinces of ours.

EU3_225.jpg
There is no need to delay. August 7th, 1519, the war is started.

EU3_226.jpg
The Cantonese chef which somehow escaped execution, moderates his cooking to a delicious millet porridge. Ming-Oirat relations reaches new heights, at least until the chef starts to 'season' the porridge.

Chinese-Horde Exotic Eateries Soothing Efforts (CHEESE): 31

It is time to expand our colonial empire in Indonesia.

EU3_229.jpg
February 2nd, 1520. Castille has been allowed to expand far too much. With them distracted by another war in Asia Minor, the nobles supporting the sick Emperor decide Ming must curb this development.

EU3_230.jpg
The nobles are shocked to learn that not only recently freed Wales, but that even our long-standing friends in France abandons us in this conflict. Presumably, they do not wish to fight Milan at this juncture. It is very fortunate we have recently brought in reinforcements from mainland China to Iberia, and can thus handle Castille on our own. Our navy can hold off Milan if need be.

However, this development marks the end of our long friendship with France. We must now prepare to take them down, somehow.

EU3_231.jpg
The most pressing issue is to gain Naval tech level 9 and the ability to blockade. The British have used this weapon well against the French, and we must do the same. Their army is boosted not only by their Lucky tag and the difficulty setting, but also by many military National Ideas.

To keep them from gaining land by boosting their war exhaustion is now impossible, and our invervention has removed two of the three empires that have checked them.

EU3_232.jpg
Castille is our target, but Milan is curiously enough the country we now want as our new best friend. They are the only non-colonial empire on the west side of Germany that might actually challenge France, as Milan has nearly united Italy.

September 13th, 1520 - Madeira is converted to hinduism.

EU3_234.jpg
Animist Delhi is incorporated in the Ming Empire.

EU3_235.jpg
In Yucatan there are sightings of British explorers. We don't mind their ships, as long as they do not carry colonists. Vigilance is necessary.

what is the tech level for eastern nations? most christian eastern nations stick with their default unit until they reach level 22 so that gives u a chance to outmatch them even with your chinese troops. once they reach land 22, things are going to get difficult so if you have a chance, swallow as much as you can before 1600.
