Playing a game as USA, its Aug 1939. China has kicked Japan out of Asia Mainland already. This is my 3rd straight game playing as USA that china has done this to Japan.

Does patch 1.10 make Japan weaker?
Or maybe it's all the infrastructure builds for Japan limiting their early ability to create Infantry units?
I do like the infrastructure builds, they help out a lot long term. Short term Japan has no chance.

Any thoughts? Or advice?

My advice is either play online or play single-player using the Improved Mod. In that mod Japan AI normally defeats China by 1940-41. But be prepared for it to act 'human-like' and do some unexpected strategies (that are still in line with the Axis vs. Allies & Comintern general war campaign).

I've noticed a similar thing playing as Russia, although not quite as extreme. The Chinese liberated Manchuria and took a couple of provinces of Korea before the Japanese rallied. They have since retaken Manchuria and NE China but the Chinese still hold Nanking and all south of the Yangtze in dec 41 when the Japanese go to war with the allies and US. At one point the Japanese IC total also greatly collapsed and it still hasn't fully recovered.

Thought it might be a one-off but if your had it happen three times!

Not sure what the Improved Mod Mr B mentioned changes as never tried that but might do next time depending on how this game goes.

The Improved Mod ensures China is defeated typically by 1940/41 in an AI v AI campaign. This is because, well, Japan is in a strong enough position to achieve this on a level playing field and also to provide a greater challenge to the USA and/or USSR as the Japan AI will choose which to target depending on the situation.

Hey Steve, yes my game is in January 1942 now. Japan just declared war on myself(USA) and the Allies in late November 1941. They have held a defensive line on the border of Korea and Manchuria for sometime now. No invasion into southern China yet. Now I notice there IC is taking a hit. Must be lack of resources. So they declare war on me??? lol I'm going to sit back and let China mess with Japan now while I focus on Germany(which almost has Moscow). We will see how much Japan can rebound and I wanna see how strong The republic of China can get..

It does seem strange that Japan goes for a wider war when its struggling so much in China. In my game, now in mid 42 Japan had fought its way back some way but is still behind the RL version so I was surprised it widened the war. Japan had seen some economic implosion when it was struggling with the Chinese counter attack but has revived somewhat.

In my game they have taken the bulk of the DEI and annexed the Philippines as well as taking Wake, However not yet touched Malaya and the US has retaken Guam so I think Japan is in pretty deep trouble. Especially since also a massive US isn't at war with Germany.

There definitely seems to be something odd about the Japanese-Chinese war balance in v10, unless we're getting results that are very rare?

Thanks. I might take a look when I get a chance. [ Family problems mean I don't have as much time as I would normally have for keeping up with the game.] :(

Thanks, I'm sure you'll enjoy it when you can :)

In regards to the Japan AI doing poorly, I imagine it's partly a hard coded issue where the AI (no matter what country) is shocking at amphibious assualts. Not sending in enough men, not protecting the supply base while advancing deeper inland, not protecting the flanks, going after pointless land.... It seems hard coded that anything that can be done incorrectly during an overseas invasion is done incorrectly by the AI. That and I imagine the Japan AI makes very little use of its air force- targeted logistical strikes are by far the most effective but interdiction is also a good use of the air force. Ground attack is not.

The AI's best attribute is launching amphibious assaults, not executing them! :D
