Tell me what you think...

A friend of mine in another forum was bitching at me because I was wallowing in war by being so interested in this game. My friend had it in his head that I was being perverse in spending my time playing a game that glorifies death. I think he had it in his head it might be some first person joy stick "shoot em up" with all kinds of blood and gutts.

I thought you would find the post I responded to him with interesting

This game is nothing like the violence filled video games that corrupt, desensitize, and brainwash young people into being violent that some people might think it is.

This game is like a massive chess game. It is not a video game shooter with blood and violence.

This type of game is a heavy duty mental exercise. It requires enormous effort in terms of thinking and concentration. There is no video graphic Eye Candy, or a joy stick

Most people would find it either impossibly hard to play, or completely boring. It is called a "Grand Strategic Simulation".

Games like this force a person to think, plan, theorize in both concrete and abstract ways and it makes you have to juggle tons of mathematical calculations and probabilities in your head.

It has absolutely no blood and guts.

As I said it as a massive chess game with thousands of pieces instead of just 24 and instead of 64 squares on the board you have thousands of squares covering the entire world. It makes you learn geography better than any other way I know of. Cities, Capitals, Regions, Resources etc....

I need a break from poker. I'm burned out. I had to get something to keep my mind focused and active. If I don't have an activity to keep my mind absorbed I start banging my head against walls. This gives me challenge. I can't stand too much television. I need something that keeps my mind active and forces me to think and concentrate; not to mention a fair amount of memorization is necessary. A game like this keeps me busy for a whole week just learning how to play it and busy for another month learning how to master it. Then I can still have fun with it for a couple more months playing with it and creating all kinds of ALTERNATE Historical Story ideas and experiencing them in a practical simulation.

As a bonus it acts as a serious study in historical, statistical, technological, cultural, geographical, as well as bibliographical fact. (Not Fiction)

Another way to describe it is that it is like reading a really good book, but instead of just reading it your co-writing it and actually get to be one of the characters in it.

You are glorifying it. Its only a computergame after all....

I admit I am a bit inebriated (on the tipsy side anyway; not drunk), but I honestly DID NOT write it as a joke. I was completely serious when I wrote it in the other forum as a response to my friend.

Here...

Check out the cut and paste of the message that the guy threw at me that I was responding to when I wrote it. My handle in the other forum is DOLPHIN. aka: Dolph

Bear in mind my friend is Greek and is a bit lacking in English.

Careful, someone in this forum might accuse you of heresy if you say this :p

Anyway, if you play Germany and you try to conquer the world, you're only FANTASIZING about that. Trying an invasion of Poland in real life would be bad; in a game, it's not that big a deal. As someone once said, if playing video games had any effect on us as kids then we would all be running around darkened rooms listening to repetitive music and eating pills. ... oh, wait :p

I'm not sure why I "needed" to check this out?

Except if it's meant to warn us of an incoming flamewar?

My friend has a much more succinct way of making this point, he says: "WWII is interesting, and if you don't think so you can F--k off."
