It's possible they just wasn't aware of it when designing the system. Might be an idea to throw out a suggestion to them on this where they have a ping out on the loading after a certain time with a following pop-up with a few tips to what might gone wrong in establishing a connection and how to go about solving it (mainly the steam community thing so far).
