What individual players do in the privacy of their own single player games is between them and the game, and other players should not cast aspersions. Some call it cheating, some call it help. In the end, it does not matter. Play the game using as many or as few of the console codes as you wish. In the end, it is your game.

When I was first learning the game and trying to determine just how things worked, I did cheat. I also restarted a lot of games and I set automatic backups to every 3 months so that I could go back 3 or 6 months to retry things.

Now, not so much. I generally live with my mistakes now. Or I get frustrated and play Dominions 3 or GalCivII for a while to cool off. :eek:o

I used to use neville quite a lot to fix weird borders for the AI. Also to give France a chance against Germany, returning it's borders after all its wars.

Not that much anymore though.

Nope, never. Okay, well a few times, only because the AI sometimes is too stupid to know what is best for them. For example when they refuse to trade away their colonies for the mainland and such.

I do that too, I hate it when UK gets pieces of Finland after the Crimean war (which they always seem to do in my games) and stuff like that. Never use other cheats though, mostly because it's wrong, but also because I don't know any other cheat codes. Best to keep it that way. :D

I do it to fix AI borders too... also to force peace settlements that the game doesn't allow but which would be much more historical for this period. IE; As Ottomans force Austria to release some satellites instead of demanding lands for myself or partition out Russian lands into independent states rather than some AI inheriting a whole bunch of random lands.

When I was learning I didn't know any cheat codes but I did make lots of saves and go back and try different things sometimes. Not even always as to rectify a bad result but just curious how different actions would change the game flow.

Neville Cheat is a lifesaver

THe only cheat I routinely use is the Neville Cheat to get the UK to accept peace when playing as China. I find it mind boggling that after losing dozens of divisions, India, Australia and Canada to a unciv that the English are still so willing to fight on. In my last game the war went on for 20 years and still showed no signs of stopping.

Is there anyway of legitimately getting a white peace short of invading the home islands?

Neville might also be justifiable to stop the vengeful USA from declaring war every 5 years on the CSA after a CSA victory.

I find it easier to just use neville to tidy borders. I lose some diplo points but the only time I need them all is when I'm a really small country. Save game editing is only reserved for major shakeups and I've only felt the need to do that a couple times for instance when me as Italy, France, and Germany all allied vs UK.... then Russia DoW Germany and Germany left the war for some small colonies from UK, then while I was invading Britain, France settled for entire UK Africa and most UK colonies elsewhere and since UK had nothing to give outside of it's national provinces now it wouldn't accept a peace treaty aside from war reparations. I just don't think some of the allied nations suddenly taking huge spoils of war like that makes historical or common sense.

USA DoWing CSA every 5 years might be also a save game edit to change USA cores as I don't think a defeated north would that eager for new wars though eventually if it comes for other reasons that seems fair.

I use exploits to change borders. Actually, border fixing became my obsession in the last games but sometimes not enough diplo points. I think the game really missing some war conclusion agreement options. Some of them are scripted but I wish much more. VIP team made some great work there.

I use cheating in only absoulutly unhistorical situations. Like in my game in Germany (Prussia) When I started the war with Denmark (which had a grand total of 5 unmobilised divisions) Russia declared war on me because of an alliance, although I had 200 relations with them (Yes, positive relations) and they also had theyre entire army in either north Finland against the UK and France or the Caucaus (is that how you spell it?) against the Ottomans, I used the aceptall cheat to make a white peace.

Use cheats to do some game debugging, like to have more control over my puppets like I should. Like say, when a puppet won't sign an alliance pact with me because of high badboy or bad relations....ridiculous, they're my puppet---they do what I say or I pull the plug and get their territory.

I use neville for that kind of stuff, as well as a few other codes on occasion. I see it as fixing, more than cheating---but sometimes, stuff just ticks you off and it has to be changed, like when the UK carries on a losing war continuously for 20 years (after 10 years, stubborness has long since expired as an excuse).

Perheaps i'm now going to my first "nevilling", to force a peace agreement over a completely occupied Germany that refuses my (not so generous, i have to admit) conditions.

I do not feel it as a "real" cheat: i will wait until the date in which, playing an old save file, i would have been able to reduce them to Berlin with multiple peaces and peace treaty violations.

What do you think about that?

This is a game

Ricky is a game which means its main purpose is to spend some good time turning Switzerland into an industrial Powerhouse; so whenever it starts hitting seriously your emotional life (frustration, anger... so on), feel free to open console, edit savegames, or add some nice events. Actually, the latter gives you the best options, as events tend to act as perturbing or re-equilibrating factors in game. I haven't played any game, yet without additional events, since the game gets boring over time. A good practice is adding a
Code:
 # Custom events
event = "db\events\custom.txt"
line in file db/events.txt, so you can modd your all your own events in one single file, which can be blanked out for the next game.
Nevertheless, notice that successful overcoming of a little emotional tense situation is the best reward any game can give you; it's up to everyone to feel the limit between excitement and frustration.

Once again. Your game...your choice. If you are fine with it, then it's fine. If you are staying up nights worried that you might be cheating, then don't do that. Listen to your conscience and play according to its directives. That way you will be able to sleep at night.

Don't be concerned about how I might think about it, though. It's really none of my business, nor should you allow others to be your conscience. You don't know where they've been. :D
