Zoroastrian will have even more of a presence. Christianity in the typical areas might have provinces of pagans sprinkled about.

Idea for how to model the Chalcedonian Church: Set the west as under the domain as the Pope, the east (minus the spheres of Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria) under the Ecumenical Patriarch, pretty much the same set up as in-game Orthodoxy, in a situation where there is a united Pentarchy, but with more territory under the Patriarch. Since they'd effectively be entirely equal to each other at this point, making the Pope the nominal head would show the extra prestige but lack of extra authority the Pope had at this point. For added fun, while the Church is united, if there was a mechanic whereby the Pope and EP could vie over various de jure kingdoms as suits them, that would be fun.

Of course, given that the new bookmark would likely start with an Iconoclastic Emperor and Patriarch in power in Constantinople, that would complicate things more.

There will be Paganism in Germany, Croatia, etc. and Zoroastrianism will probably have a stronger presence. Catholicism and Orthodoxy will probably remain the same, but it is possible that the Schism gets its own treatment.

Nothing much controversial about the culture map seeing as it is still in early alpha IMO.

What exactly will the ideal religion map look like? Will there be any particular religions with more of a presence? What groups will still be pagan? How should Christianity be categorized? We've seen the somewhat controverial culture map. I'm rather excited to see what comes out as religion is concerned.

More Christians in some parts of the map while more pagans in other parts of the map, perhaps finally adding the Exilarch, the jewish leader of the exile, as a vassal to the Caliph as they were though the old god start before they disappeared before the 1066 start.

More of nestorianism, miaphysitism, zoroastrians, iconoclasts, pagans... Basically take away lots of catholic land, give it to pagans, take away Sunni land and give it to the other Christians and Zoro's, and flip some provinces in ERE to iconoclast.

back in the age this new exp start wasn't catholic and orthodox not split? will this be adressed?

The schism was made formal in the 1050s, so they shouldn't be split in The Old Gods start either.

I doubt they'll fix it, but maybe!

There was a big Council of Constantinople stir in the year The Old Gods starts... but other than that, nothing particularly shatter-worthy in the preceding 80 years.

The Hellenic religion had been almost entirely wiped out by the year 200 A.D. except in certain isolated areas in Egypt where they were wiped out by 400 A.D. or so.

I am disappointed in the timeline expansion. I had hoped for something substantial to improve and deepen gameplay.

Seems Paradox doesn't listen to what we want. They only listen to what we'll pay for. I skipped Rajas of India.... If this thing really is $19.99, I'll skip it as well.

While I hope to avoid the religious debates, I think would be historically accurate to have the Bishop of Rome as the head of "Chalcedonian" Christianity. There are numerous examples of bishops - even in the nominal jurisdiction of other Patriarchs - having a sort of final appeal to Rome. Inside the Church, the Bishop of Rome was given an undisputed Primacy of Honor, and Rome's Primacy of Jurisdiction only started to be disputed in the 8th-9th Centuries, not a small part of which involved Imperial Politics and the whims of whomever happened to sit the Imperial Throne. It was only then that the Patriarch of Constantinople started to get...uppity ;)

Actually Hellenism hung on a lot longer than you think there was some Hellenic provences scattered around till the early 800s so I think Hellenism will be this expansion Zoroastrianism

it was still the official religion of the roman empire in 200 A.D., and the last pagan emperor died in 363.

Well, if the modern day is anything to judge by, our leaders are hardly down with the latest trends. Show me a map.

Either way though the Hellenic religion was GONE by 769.

No, this simply isn't true, the ruling class might have all have been christian but I know for certain that pagan practices survived in Italy up to the 6th century among the the farmers and such in the country side. If you want sources I'd have to email my old professor, but I could get them (thought there's a fair chance they would be in Italian or french)

It seems like this will be a minor expansion as it will only add 769 start and Charlemagne's life events. I'm assuming the custom kingdoms/empires will be patch content.
