Is it just all my playthroughs or is AI Charlamagne a total idiot. The most that he'll do is conquer saxony then sit on his butt 20 years and drop dead. He never creates France even if he has enough money and piety. Nor does he attack lombardy or bavaria when he has claims on them.

In my games, he genreally conquers Saxony and tries to defeat Lombardy (to no success). Then he creates a lot of kingdoms (while still being gavelkind) and dies somewhat later, spawning bordergore everywhere.

Dunno, Francia is formed quite regularly in my games when I don't play in Europe. When I'm playing there I tend to sabotage him, by looting his lands while he is fighting someone else.

In my games, he also has a habit of dying in that early war with Bavaria that Karlomann always calls him into. If he does manage to survive the war, he'll live long enough to create a bunch of kingdoms to ensure gavelkind hell.

Only a handful of times have I ever seen Francia and the only time I've ever seen an HRE in 769 was via Lombardy.

I've never seen an AI HRE creation, and I've only seen AI Francia twice.

I have an AI Francia in my current game, but the only reason it's there is because of 3 rulers in a row with only one son.
For some Reason the AI thinks it has to create all the duchys and kingdoms before it goes empire, which is a pretty shitty piece of coding, that pretty much breaks any early AI blobs before they even get rolling. It's a damn shame if you ask me.

It's probably to do with being able to afford them first. It might also be a gold:prestige ratio problem.

He forms francia depending on whether he has enough money to create every single kingdom under him. The less land he owns the better actually. It's a problem with the AI who love creating any title available instead of saving up for a bigger better title.

I waited until CM had got middle francia and saxony, and gave him loads of money. It took 25000 gold for him to get round to forming it! First he created loads od duchies, then kingdoms (bad idea with gavelkind), then he built a castle in every spare slot he had, then he built a load of castle walls and other crap, and then he created francia.

I'd call that more of a feature. Some nations and dynasties (Karling...) have an easy enough time blobbing up as it is.

I've never seen a HRE formed by the AI in a game and have only seen Francia form when Charlemagne is a heretic and revokes enough titles to get under the vassal limit. From what I've seen, Heretic Chuck always swarms Brittany and Bavaria before turning on Scandinavia.

Since Conclave came out though, every game I start has Charlemagne die within the first decade with no sons. This ends up with Karloman inheriting and then going right down the same path of creating every title he can instead of Francia. I'd say seven times out of ten I see one of Karloman's kids create an antipope, Andalusia grab Galicia before overrunning Aquitaine, and Catholicism completely collapse from having its moral authority cut in half by those two things.

I think people would be singing a different tune if Karl formed either of the Empires any bit regularly. Either you are playing as Karl, and you want to succeed. Or you are playing as someone else, and either of those two empires forming severely limits your expansion options into Europe unless your plan all along was to play as Francia or the HRE as a Nordic Invader. Most games the constituent kingdoms pop up by around AD900 and tend to be low on the gore unless you have been fucking around with Europe, in my experience. I like it that way personally.

I've seen the following a lot:

  • Conquer Saxony.
  • Suddenly see zillions of pagans rise in revolt. Far, far, far more than there were armies defending it in the first place. Pagans easily win back the territory.
  • Then the Muslims attack.
  • Aquitaine and Toulouse become Muslim.
  • Lombardy repeatedly tries to invade Tunis without boats, and is of no help in defense of France because they keep marching their army overland and die of insane attrition en route.

Shouldn't Charlamagne by default have the ambitious trait? I heard it drastically influences ai decision making, making them more likely to press claims and such? Not to mention Charlamagne was ambitious.

The last time I ever saw Karl (or more correctly a lucky descendant) was back in 2.4.5, and even then they were obliterated by the Caliphate of Maan (Hispania). I have never seen an AI HRE before the 1066 start date.
