Rather than having everyone starting with a Blackjack every time, it would be fun to include different starting mechs based on which background traits you take at the beginning of the game. I believe this also might encourage multiple playthroughs of the game. Heavier or lighter starting Mech could be balanced by starting with some "+" weaponry (perhaps even a bit of Lostech?) or even missing some equipment.

Adittionally, I would like to see the characters background featured more prominently in the game somehow through more events or even a side-quest chain that ties in to your characters background.

I totally agree here, also would be nice to see more divercity than just "noble" origin. Maybe even have some different campaigns for different characters! But having something like impacting your further gameplay feels like a must, because it's not like being someone from somewhere helps you get any boons, just flavour text -_-
Would be nice if it changed your starting mech or better yet even your starting lance (like in tactics ogre knight of lodis game for gba, you can start with different squad depending on your choices). Different stats on pilots and different mechs to pilot for them because you picked a pirate instead of gladiator!

Different starting mechs would be nice (there is a mod for that of course :)), they could always balance the new ancestral mech by adjusting one of the other mechs up or down in weight to match if they felt the need.
