This is what I submitted, uploaded so I don't have to worry about formatting issues. I think I can guess why I didn't win--it's a bit 'drier' and academic...but I had a good time writing it and I think it's a pretty good look at the hundred days.

At the risk of sounding posh and indignant towards the other authors;

I really enjoyed your story. I think that it really shows the benefits of a formal tertiery education in the liberal arts, if such a statement can be made from such a small sample size. (Of course this is not to accuse everyone else of being lazy or stupid, I fully understand the difficulty some people have in accepting expensive university loans). I found few, if any, major grammatical 'oops' moments (although to be fair, many other authors did not have English as a first language) and the general structure and flow of the story was very pleasant. I certainly enjoyed reading it not just for its grammatical flow, but also its serious attempt to be a work of history in itself. To me, your historical analysis of post-Waterloo is brief but sufficiently reasoned and logical, but perhaps to the average reader (again, not trying to sound condescending!) some of it may have been difficult to follow. Although given the 5000 word limit I can hardly use this to criticise you, especially considering how well the rest of the story flowed. Perhaps you picked up this skill from working to arbitrary word limits in university!

I also have to agree with your self-analysis. I am not accusing Paradox of rigging the competition by any means, but your drier and more academic tone probably does not scream 'bestseller!' to the average audience. If it is any consolation, if this was actually a textbook I would buy it just for leisure reading! Perhaps my only criticism therefore is to write a short story in the short story contest.

Thank you for taking the time to reading the story! I appreciate the constructive criticism and am very glad that you enjoyed it!

I also one to say I agree 100% and am not claiming bias or anything by Paradox Books in their choices for the winners at all--I'm excited to read what has been picked; I've enjoyed the other non-selected ones. I just mean that going back and looking at what most others have written, we wrote in a different style than what Paradox was looking for. I guess next time, if I submit for a contest, I'll try to have a more traditional style story.

But all in all, I really had a fun time researching for the paper, throwing ideas around, and writing it with my dad.
