Hi,

I am still making good progress in improving the icon layout of the various provinces in the game. I'm also improving the ship locations in a lot of coastal sea zones, to reduce overlap with the nearby land provinces.

While doing that, I noticed than some of the coastal sea zones don't have names of their own, but are instead named in a more generic format, like 'Coast of Arice', where Arice is a bordering land province.

The point is, some of those sea zones border on two land provinces, one with a port, and one without a port. And wouldn't you know it, the sea zone is named after the province without a port. IMHO, it makes more sence to name such a sea zone after the land province that has the port.

And this is precisely my question. Does anyone have any objections if we would rename those 'Coast of ...' sea zones after the bordering provinces that have a port?

To date I've encountered a couple of those in the America's. Mind you, I have to recheck africa and asia, because when I did those, I wasn't really paying attention to the sea zone names.

If the names of seazones can be changed, could also seazones called "Ocean" be changed to something?

All sea zones (inculding ocean) are listed as enties in the province.csv file, and thus all of them have a name that can be altered as needed.

What kind of proposal do you have in mind?

Ah this is a very good thing indeed.

In the new Mongolian Empire Scenario the Dutch province of Gelre hasd the city of Roermond as its capital. I think I am going to change it to Nymegen or such.

what do you think JP, which city is the best for 1150?

While totally off topic :)D), I would put it that Roermond is totally inappropriate. Nymegen, OTOH, is very appropriate, as it was

a) A city and regional centre from the Roman era onwards.
b) One of the seats of goverment of Karl V, at one time the ruler of the entire north western region of europe.

Only, please use our way of spelling, which is Nijmegen.

It is only slightly off topic. But if I post it anywhere else I have to explain the entire context. so...... ;)

Eh. ok, Nijmegen (ken die stad als mijn broekzak, 5 keer vierdaagse)
or Nymwegen.

What was the way it was called in in medieval times?

Could be done, as sea zones aren't written on the map, but only defined in province.csv.

Indeed, though that is one of the tjhings I missed from EU1. Having 'The North Sea' sprawled across...well..the North Sea, was fun, I liked that, shame it was not in EU2 *cough - EU3*

But yeah, this sounds a good plan. I also would like to see 'Ocean' removed, even if just for a continuation of 'South Indian Ocean' or 'North Pacific Ocean' (depending where it is of course ;) )

But keep in mind the possibility that the "Coast of XXX" seazones can actually be named correctly, and it's the decision not to give the province a port that is wrong.

Maybe it would help to make a list of the proposed changes, and people could then give their opinion on specific cases rather than a general "yes".

I have no objection whatsoever to renaming some of those non-coastal seazones. Although they always remind me of the "Glutonic Knights" AAR and the exploration of the high seas. Something like : And we sailed around in the sea, and we asked the commander "What shall we call this place, m'lord?" - "North Atlantic Ocean" -and we sailed some more, and we were like "what do we call this area, m'lord?" - "North Atlantic Ocean" - and we sailed some more.... That was just brilliant.

EDIT: Awesome. The system now doesn't allow you to post the same thing twice!! In other words, I almost double-posted.

While that may be true in theory, the chance of this being the case is rather slim, as it would mean that this would have slipped past everyone over the past 2 years. Currently I am going from the assumption that the ports are correct.

Becides, changing a name of a sea zone is purely cosmetic, while actually adding/removing a port changes the gameplay itself ;)

I didn't suggest adding the port, I was just saying that if you have a seazone named "Coast of Guinea" and a Guinea province without a port, it doesn't necessarily invalidate the name of the seazone (note I have no idea if that is the case with Guinea, I don't even remember if there's a Coast of Guinea in the game, just the first "coast of something real-life seazone" that came to mind.)

That's right. I have no problem having a sea zone renamed, unless that sea area is genuinely known by the name that's in use now. If so, we're keeping it, port or no.

For instance the "Atacama Coast" I've heard of, but not the name that you've proposed (which I forget for the moment).

While you are at it JPD, the area outside Trondheim (mid-Norway) is called "Frohavet" in norwegian maps. Also in the same area are banks (fishingbanks, like the great banks) "Frøyabanken" & "Haltenbanken"

"Throndheim Fjord" is inland (as a fjord should be... :D ) and spelled wrong as well. "Trondheimsfjord" is the right name for the fjord.
On going further south:
The are of "Sea Of Bergen" is known here in Norway as "Stadthavet". That's what it says on maps and so on, and it's not a place you want to be in a rowboat in a storm ;)
Next up; "Sea Of Stavanger" is perhaps the best name for that area, since it goes all the way down to germany. However, to me (and most others I suspect) that area is part of the North Sea. The norwegian coastline in the area is called "Jær-reva" (ie. the Jær Reefs") if you prefer that name... But since the area also includes Denmark & germany I think the name should be "North Sea".
