One of the dev diaries says that you can change your state religion. Will this just be the typical Catholic -> Reformed/Protestant or much wider than in EU3? Will forcing religion through war make a comeback, and to what extent? How feasible would it be to become Sunni Italy?

One of the easier ways I can imagine to convert would be to take over a province with the religion you want to convert to, then antagonize the peasants until an '[X religon] Zealots' rebel group pops up. Once that happens, accept their demands and hopefully that results in a state conversion (albeit likely with heavy prestige and stability drops).

That was a way to convert your state religion in EU3, but it's a bit awkward to do.

I'd rather have something like:

Be able to change the state religion to religion of the capital province.

Be able to change the state religion to the religion that has at least X percent of the total tax value of the provinces with that religion. (X amount can be somewhere between %10 to %25) Similiar to cultural acceptance. In fact, same can be implemented with the accepted cultures.

If you reform your religion during CK2's timeframe, then the mod created by the converter will include the reformed version of your religion as one of the major religions. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with shamanic/animist.

And in later versions, it became no longer an option. In DW you can only surrender and convert to zealots within your own religion group, so Protestant to Orthodox or Sunni to Shia. Can't jump from Catholic to Shamanist, sadly.

So it was completely impossible, even if you go the Vicky2 route and let the right rebels win? I was thinking that Ming should be Catholic, obviously, and working out how to make that happen.

Disregarding modding; in EU3 you could let zealots take your capital and then you collapse after a while to them and they enforce their demands. It is quite risky to do however all other rebels would get their demands.

As comradebot said, in later versions this was removed to only work with heretics. Personally I would really like to see the >%tax provinces can convert or capital province conversion.

Though, if memory serves, you could pull it off by collapsing down to a 1PM.

And if you were Pagan and in the process of westernizing, there was an event with a MTTH larger than the timespan of the game itself that could convert you to a more "proper" religion. I only Westernized once as a Pagan (Mutapa!!!) and it's safe to say I was still an Animist by the 1700s when we were crossing the Pacific into California. The annoying thing? You got spammed with events that'd give you the option to convert provinces to Christianity or Islam, but there was zero reason to ever take them. Didn't let you convert, it just created counties you'd have less tolerance.

I'd love to see where a 100% sunni country will convert to Shia or Christian religion

this has happened with the safavids

This first was possible in EUIII, it'd just require Shia heretics to spawn outside the country and march into it and then manage to win it.

The other... only if it was conquered, all the provinces converted, and became independent again later (I've seen a lot of Catholic Granadas because of this). I do hope it's possible, religious factions overthrowing the government and installing a new state religion isn't unheard of.
