Changing speeds and tech groups

Sorry - two more important questions:

1) I am playing with a laptop so I don't have the numeric section of the keyboard. How do I change the speed of the game? In EU3 I used the buttons at the top of the page but here I can't see any such thing. I tried using the other + button by pressing ctrl shift and that button ( normally it's = ) but it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe there is a way to change the game speed hotkey?

2) In EU3, non-latin countries could westernize if some certain conditions were met, which would bring them up to the next tech level. Is there any way to "tech up" in FtG? Or are you doomed with your tech penalty to the end? (I really hope you are not)

1) The settings menu accessed via the general menu.

2) Short of cheating or a specific event, no you cannot change tech groups in FtG.

But what if I need to change game speed quite frequently? It's a huge pain to keep going to the menu for this.

If there is a way to change the key arrangement, that would be a good solution

That is the problem, I don't have the numeric section, therefore not the + and - keys

Don't you have some Fn alternate for numeric pad?

Otherwise, you can change the speed in game through the menu and Options.

IIRC it can be done through pressing either - or Shift and the +/= key. I'm not at my laptop right now so I can't check sorry.

I know some programs hate Enter on laptops and some hate the FN key.

Good idea for the future and this is possible for some shortcuts as hildoceras said but speed keys are hardcoded for now.

Yes, tried that.

What about pause game instead of often change game speed ?
I play with max speed with pause it is good solution imho.
