Historically it happen. But does it really pay off? I did it once myself while learning the game but I was just curious at the time. "Golly.....I wonder what would happen if I do this?" type of thing. :) The negative is obvious as soon as you change. Lost stability, lost troop moral, lost income, vp loss not to mention your own nation wanting to revolt. Plus all your neighbors are angry at you for cutting off relations. Then there are the neighbors who want to kick your ass. So whats the reason for changing religions?

If you go from catholic to protestant you get $25 for every province you have, plus a 20% increase in taxes, plus colonists.

Reformed gets even more colonists, but has less tax revenue.

Plus, religion modifies stability costs, so it pays off to be the same rekigion as the majority of your provinces, or at least the rich ones.

Besides...if you change early (like, right away) then following nations immediately gravitate toward you diplomatically. If you are a larger Nation (UK for example) you are iun a great position to dominate the Protestant or Reformed world. You become the alliance creator as well, and the vehicle to spread the religion so that1 more of the world favors you instead of the Spanish and French...

The alternative to what Dahveed said it to wait until late 16th or early 17th century to change religions to protestant. Even though you will behind on alliances and such, you offend less nations because most of them are already protestant, and hence your diplo status is much higher. If you go full tolerance to Catholic, there is no reason to change unles most of your provinces are protestnt. England should always wait to change until she gets a sizeable number of colonies (the 25 per province bonus is a nice shot to help deal with -3 stability).

Absolutely Stonewall...

Also, I would suggest that the country you play with is crucial. Franch converting will bring down a shit-storm on your head when all your neighbors basically hate you overnight. England has ome isolation and a nice navy to defend herself. If you are a minor and one or two of your neighbors have changed and the others haven't you ahve to play it by ear.

I played a game where right after and alliance was formed with two other minors, both changed to protestant. I had to make a quick decision because they got me into a war soon. I decided to change during the war and was able to absorb some of the consequences w/ the boost in cash and during the war and making my alliance a thing that lasted NUMEROUS CENTURIES!

each game is different and each player has a different goal in mind.

What Dahveed said...plus if you convert during war, you get to keep your alliance. This is very useful if you've pumped a lot of money into your alliance or need it for protection. Also, if you want to get into an alliance with someone and they never seem to be alone, wait for them to convert and then convert with them and form a new alliance on your own. Its a nice little trick to get out of an alliance without having to pay the stability penalties, since you're already at -3. Be careful though, your former alies get a temp CB on you and if they're angry at you, you could be in for a war or three.

That CB is easy to counter if you have really good relations with said allies and then pull them back in right after the conversion.
