Playing France in the Campaign game I went through the Reformation event. I didn't do anything about it but a few years after that one of my provinces changed their religion to Protestant by random event. My question is: Is there anyway that I can change other individual provinces over to Protestantism myself a few at a time so that I can put troops in those areas to quell any revolts that may occur and keep doing that until the majority of my country has converted and then change my state religion to Protestantism? I don't want to change my state religion to Protestantism now for fear of revolts breaking out all over the place with no way to control them.

Why would you want to become protestant anyway?

If there are less than 5000 citizens (Dauphine), you can send a colonist, it will change the province's religion... You have to become protestant first, though...

It can be done, like Patriote says, you can send colonists to provinces with less then 5000 ppl and that why change the province religion into the state religion. Other ways are to edit the game files, or edit your save file, lower the amount of ppl who lives in your province, so it drops under 5000 and can be colonised.

Do you really have to convert province population? You can convert to Protestantism and then set the religion sliders so you maximize tolerance towards both Protestantism and the religion that is the predominant one in your provinces.

Of course, however, stability improvements will be more expensive if your have a lot of provinces with another religion than your state religion.

To lower a provinces population to less than 5000, you can minimize tolerance against the religion of the province/provinces you want to convert, in order for rebellions to spring up. When they do, let the rebels capture the town, sent in your units to siege it, and assault the town before it falls; The best way to lower the province population is to have it occupied by troops (yours or enemy troops) or by assaulting it.

If I change my state religion to Protestantism (it is now Catholic), does that make all the other provinces change to Protestantism? I'm just trying to make all my provinces the same as the state religion. It seems that more and more provinces are changing to Protestantism with random events. I was just trying to convert my entire country to Protestantism with the least amount of rebellion. Thanks for your replies by the way.

PS..is anyone getting Hearts of Iron when it comes out? (I'm in the US, it will be released here next month, maybe some of you in Europe already have it?)

No it doesnt. It is almost impossible as France to convert every french province into protestant as many of the provinces are and will be catholic... you would have to lower tolerance for catholics to a minimum and then fight endless sieges and assualt against rebelling provinces in order to lower ther population below 5.000 so that you may send a colonist.

But you have almost 200 years so it's far from impossible. Well Ile de France might be impossible, but the rest will be tedious and tiresome, but it is eminently doable. Reformed is a pretty good religion for France anyway - the trade bonus is a great help, the morale boost is great (until near the end of the game) and the stab bonus is nice little extra. OK so you need to do a lot of supression to get there...

It's a waste of time, IMO. Not what I'd call an exciting game.

I would strongly encourage it if we were talking about some unknown Africans or Polynesians... but French? There wouldn't be any me. :D

Let's just say it's not a *winning* strategy:D . Having said that, now I want to try it just for fun. In my current GC as England, I colonized the Highlands and all Ireland (all peacefully, mind you; no Cromwell I) while random events have converted to Reformists and most other Catholic provinces in the British Isles. Chances are that before the end of the game (current year 1603) random conversions will have made my entire realm one religion.

To keep all my people happy, I had set my tolerance of Protestants, Reformists, and Catholics to near max, but of course that means Moslems and Orthodox hate me  .
